Port newbie

I'm coming towards the end of a scenario and I need to get my ships into port.
I have read the rules but must have missed something out because I can't get my ships to go into port !!
how do you get ship to enter a port (I'm sure it must be simple which makes it all the more frustrating)

They should do it the same way aircraft do: simply order them to RTB (shortcut "B" key). If they don't maybe it's because they have no base assigned. Right click on unit -> "Select new home base" then left click on the port you wish to assign them as home base. Specifying which scenario you're playing will also come handy (since there may be a bug in it itself).

Also, make sure the port's facilities can handle the ship you wish to dock. If the piers are too small the ship won't dock. Just like you can't land a C-5 on a short airstrip built for Cessna's and other small/light aircraft.
