Aircraft buy back

Post by KPAX »

Playing a PBEM as Aldo. My opponent did well at Pearl Harbor and Sunk 5 BBs.

Does it make sense to buy back those float planes? they are cheap, for planes for 20 PPs. I would use those units for Mabel training of dive bombers.

Is it worth it and does it make sense?

Mabel training? for the Americans? When did the Americans get Japanese Navy Torpedo bombers?

That said, if the go to Kingfishers they can train Naval bombing s well as for Fighters. You might also be able to resize them.

My guess is that they will not resize since they are float planes coming off of a BB.

May not be worth it. if you put an expired pilot and you would only have three or four which you would be training.

Maybe would be worth it on a smaller base as naval search or ASW. Something to think about.

Anyone but back those small flood planes coming off of the ship before? If so, what did you use them for?

What ships make resizing possible for Allied floating planes? I'm not particularly sure, but I seem to recall stock game does not have Allied ships which are able to operate sizeable FP airgroups (like CS for Japan), all the AVP AV stuff is support.

Some ships can carry more than two. It also depends upon the scenario as to what ships are available. But as long as you have two planes, they can Naval search and see everything in a 4 hex range.

There are two or three Allied AVs that can carry patrol planes but not launch them from the deck. They should be able to load up FPs and maybe they could expand the squadron.

If you get into an area where the islands are close together, a small FP squadron is handy to keep tabs on the nearby enemy via Recon missions. It can also be a good ASW patroller to keep enemy subs off the approaches to its port.

That is what I was thinking as well.

Maybe for training of Nabel die bombers. But maybe that doesn’t make sense since I believe they can only be size for your group.

With the range of six and using it as ASW or naval search, this might be a good use for them.

But, does anyone have an opinion as to whether 20 PPs are worth a for plain group? I could spend 100 PP four 5 4-Play in groups and use them for ASW in the bay around San Diego and LA and do a pretty decent job of covering that area.

If you can't see how two days worth of PP generation fits into a game which has more than 1600 days generating PPs, then you really are wasting your time playing this game.

Yes they are worth it.

Your "standard" convoy route to the South Pacific very likely goes past numerous islands. You can park those groups on a 0/0 atoll, after flying a few aviation support squads in by Catalina, or sending an AVD there. They in effect scare IJ subs away from an 8 hex segment of your convoy route. I doubt they'll ever sink one, but that is not the point. They also give some early warning of any IJN moves into your LOC.

In later years when you have more multi-engine patrol aircraft than you can find bases for, those float plane groups are still useful, because you can park them just about anywhere with a water view.
