Possible bug in Norway reaction to British convoy raiding

Post by Aussiematto »

Full 1939 WAW game, PBEM

My side Allies

Turn 1 and I am trying something different in the North Sea, having discovered a U-boat sneaking around there. I don't raid the Norwegian convoy lane at all (no units turned on as raiders), and don't put any units on that lane. I do have at least one unit adjacent.

End of turn shows Norway is unhappy (and assume this moves it closer to Axis).

Is this a feature or a bug? Would have thought you would need to have allied unit in raider mode on the convoy for it to fire.

Note - will check and confirm when I get my next turn to see what the exact disposition of forces is.

I do have at least one unit adjacent.

And there is probably the reason why. I didn't realize this myself until recently, but naval units can raid by moving either on, or adjacent to, enemy convoy lines according to section 5.9. Raiding. So, you don't have to be physically on the convoy arrows to raid,

Which makes more sense really. I don't think wartime convoys usually sailed single file all the time.

Neato! Thanks. I am still learning....

That said, no actual raiding turned on, so it is still a sort-of bug.

I also note being adjacent to the US no swim line triggers bad US reaction too.

Hi Aussiematto,

This is not a bug as you are correct, it is not a raiding issue, it is a territorial waters issue and Allied encroachment within Norwegian waters that raises Norwegian concerns. Similar to the US reaction you noted above.

Hope this helps,
Hubert

Thanks. What is the definition of the territorial waters ... adjacent to the coast?

In this case it is along the convoy route, as the presence of Allied warships would impede the flow of Norwegian merchantmen carrying Swedish Ore to Germany.
