The US in on fire literally :(

Post by MrsWargamer »

This is not political, I'm posting to say, my thoughts are with all the schmucks dealing with this.

If not the hurricanes on the east coast and Gulf trashing everything, it's the fires on the west coast trashing everything.

Seeing entire towns burned down is beyond words to describe.

2020 has not been any friend to the US. Covid is salt in the wound.

I know of a great many friends who live in the US. I worry for you people south of the border. Hurricane season doesn't end until late November, and the fires are likely going to rage for some time as well.

I'd post an image I saw on the news, but you can find it easy enough. Half the US seems on fire.

Largest fire in SoCal started with a gender-reveal party pyrotechnic gone wrong; largest in Central California/Bay Area was a merger of numerous smaller fires sparked by dry lightning. We have always had a few arson-started fires, but most start with malfunctioning vehicles and power lines downed by high winds. The drought that ended in 2017 killed millions of trees throughout the state and these are providing much of the fuel.

I live near Eugene, Oregon and the fires are all around the state. The smoke is very dense here and visibility is less than a mile. It has been raining ash for the last few days. Check out this link of the fires and smoke coverage

I live on the coast of Washington State.

Come enjoy our murky, sooty beaches. If you relish the aroma of a wood pit fire.....everywhere, this is the place for you.

Lousy forest control over the past 50 years or more. It has to do with the way they manage the forest system with controlled burns and not allowing build up. Plus, maintenance on electrical wires according to what I heard has been deficient. Plus, increased population growth makes things even more treacherous. You have to control the forests.

Seriously, has anyone ever heard of a gender reveal party going well? In the best case scenario, you're stuck at an awkward event, forced to look at pictures of fetal genitalia and eat sticky sweet cake with sticky sweet buttercream frosting.

Worst case, you and the other guests are forced to endure some amateurish stunt and then flee for your lives from an out of control wildfire. This madness from attention craving parents-to-be needs to stop.

I feel for those in the bushfire areas, it is terrible experience. The smoke, the fear, the loss of wildlife, the loss homes and of stock. In a high risk bushfire area it is always in the back of your mind. Chin up fight on folks.

If you live in a place where such fires can be a problem, try to go with a steel roof. There is a much decreased chance of flying embers catching the roof on fire then.

Part of it was not allowing the natural fires to burn when they would not get out of control, it was put every fire out. Now they know better but that is why some fires are so bad. If you remember Yellowstone burning in the 1990's, then you know why that happened the way that it did.

The Portland office of the FBI on Friday addressed the rumors and claims on social media that Oregon wildfires are the result of a coordinated arson ring:
FBI Portland and local law enforcement agencies have been receiving reports that extremists are responsible for setting wildfires in Oregon. With our state and local partners, the FBI has investigated several such reports and found them to be untrue. Conspiracy theories and misinformation take valuable resources away local fire and police agencies working around the clock to bring these fires under control. Please help our entire community by only sharing validated information from official sources.

However, I'm sure in certain mindsets this means that it's the FBI starting the fires. [8|]

Personally, I've been dealing with stinging eyes and a scratchy throat, but at least I haven't had to evacuate yet.

Here in Portugal we also have a lot of wildfires every year.
People always tell that most are set by people. I hear this story for 40 years. It's a common belief, a myth.
There's a fire, then someone must have set it up. (sigh)

Pretty dramatic photo Aurelian . Spooky how it resembles a mushroom-shaped cloud laid on its side.

I'm so hoping for rain on Monday. I've had enough of living in the Mordor Corridor to last me a while.

Think of all of the sunlight that is being blocked and then all of those smoke particles for water vapor to collect on, then drop onto the fire burned ground to get the ground wet, then start moving . . .

The Creek Fire in California looks eerily like a Tzar Bomba was just set off.
