War in PBEM - probablyu classic question

How are battles going to be determined in PBEM?

I have no simple solution as to how one is supposed to determine result of battles via PBEM. Auto choosing of tactics is not really preferred since you really want to adjust tactics depending on several facttors.

The way I, as GM, handle it in the Ajaccio PBEM game:
I inform both involved parties that combat is at hand at a certain location. I tell them which leaders and number of corps present and inform them who is defender and who is attacker.
They then each send me their tactics and, should they have guards present, they inform me on how I should use those guards (commit the guards when having a 5/6 chance to break the enemy, commit the guards should the opponent have picked the outflank chit and when the outflank arrives).
Then I start rolling the dice.

I'ld guess the computerized EiA will act in approx the same way. Implementing guard commitment will be more difficult, as that is the only variable factor in a combat resolution. I'm curieus how Matrix has handled this.
