I still have my second front box somewhere around here, but my oldest strategy title i have is "Crusade in Europe" from microprose. (on a lousy 5 1/4" disk)
Can you beat that?![]()
I started playing war games about 20 years before you were born. Tactics II by Avalon Hill. Years ago someone told me that in mint condition it was then worth $200 however mine was worn out from overuse.

Sorry, my friend, Tactics II was produced in large numbers (when you include the 1964, 1968, 1971, and 1974 re-issues), and I have never seen one (unpunched or otherwise) sell for more than ten or twelve bucks. Collector interest is just not there.
1958 U-Boat (with the metal ships) sells for around $35-40 in good condition. Gettysburg is a dog. Afrika Korps, Battle of the Bulge, and D-Day are dogs. Maybe the best collector's item in the early AH issues is Le Mans, a copy of which sold on eBay recently for a little over a hundred bucks (original price: $6.95). The Longest Day unpunched, originally at $65-85, brings around $180 these days, and the price is going up slowly. Unpunched copies of Magic Realm and Titan, late seventies and early eighties games, respectively, have recently broken the $100 per copy barrier (after selling new for around twenty simoleans).
Looking to make some dough on old board games? Go for the SPI monsters (War in the Pacific, Atlantic Wall, Wacht am Rhein, Highway to the Reich, and the rest - all WWII). I have seen an unpunched, mint copy of WITP go for a touch over $600 (after selling 30-some years ago for twenty bucks).
My oldest 5 1/4" disk treasure? Grigsby's "Carrier Force." Box, manual, laminated maps, and disk in mint condition. Value? ...

I'm not a collector of old board games just a rabid fan of playing them. I think the guy who told me about the value of Tactics II got the game from me for free, like I said it was worn out. It might have also been a first edition since it didn't use NATO symbols on the counters but called the 1st Inf Div the 1 Inf. That also could have been 20 years ago but was definitly over 15 years ago.

I'm not sure what my first PC wargame was but I played it on an Atari 800XL. It might have been Eastern Front by Chris Crawford. Again this is just a guess (the name and the author). I am on my 6th PC, the first 3 not actually being PCs but an Atari and 2 different Amigas. I have been up grading about every 3 or 4 years.
My first stratcig wargame was Guadalcanal on a Schneider/Amstrad CPC but I loved Second Front on my Amiga (Tigers and Me262 nearly everywhere
) !

I played Panzergrenadier, Shilo and Pegasus Bridge on the C64. Liked the SSI titles and I did run Panzergrenadier on a Emulator some weeks ago. Well, 15 years ago it was more fun
.
My first computerwargame was "Operation" or something like that. I think it was from SSI too.

Ah, memories... Crusade in Europe was one of the first computer strategy games I've played, back in the days of the 'Brotkasten' ('breadbox') C64, and I've been addicted to military history and wargam... I mean conflict simulations ever since. I remember Guadalcanal and Kampfgruppe, too.
I have 'liberated' the PC version of CIE from the web recently and good lord, most hotkeys were still present in my brain 14 years or so since I last played it.

Well, apart from CIE called back from retirement, PacWar is the most senior active program on my computer, and it will stay on my HD even after WITP is out - even if I do no longer play it often, I feel PW deserves this place of honor!

Just out of curiosity, do you have the latest incarnation of PW (v. 3.2) or one of the earlier ones? I've still got the pre-Matrix v. 2.3 on my old 200MMX box, and 3.2 on my new sofistimicated dowacky.
I am having some trouble getting to like 3.2.

Pasternakski, I have the Matrix versions from 2.0 upward to 3.2 as well as the old SSI v1.2 from the '20 Wargames'-bundle. I'm actually playing 3.2 but with my own obc file. I've started messing with the obc in earnest after Rich's Excel-based editor came out (the previous editor was arkward) and with each new version Matrix resp. Jeremy formerly known as Major Tom has churned out, the process of adapting the obc to my taste did start again. I really appreciate the job Jeremy has done on PW and he has implemented some great ideas (e.g. removal of USN automatic ship replacement in v3.1), but some things I simply couldn't accept - first thing I usually did was to reinstate the LSTs
! Unfortunately I cannot change some design decisions - I don't like the plane type restrictions for the Aussie and Dutch air groups, but that's hardcoded... anyway, praise to Jeremy and the Matrix for keeping PW a fascinating, challenging and fun game!
Jeez, I've just reinstalled v1.2 for a laugh, what a difference compared to 3.2 or even 2.0!!!

old PC games
Kampfgruppe and Warship. Warship was a true favorite since it had the easiet ship editor I've ever seen. Nothing was better than replacing all the 5-inch batteries on the Iowa with Long Lance torpedoes!! Or putting 16-inch guns on a Mahan class destroyer. Those were the days.

"Commonwealth" Aircraft
I fully agree with LST about the limitations on Australian and Dutch air squadrons. However, there are some work-arounds. If you look at Part 2 of the ".doc" files explaining the changes, you will see that planes which are ordinarily not available to "Commonwealth" squadrons are upgrades from planes which are. For instance, Wirraways upgrade to P-40 Warhawks, which is how Jeremy intended to get Australian squadrons flying them. But, there's nothing preventing you from changing a Dutch unit to the Wirrawy, and then accepting the P-40 upgrade when it's offered!
Likewise, the Blenheim IV upgrades to the Vengeance dive-bomber, which is a very potent aircraft in Ver. 3.2.

Me too.
idem for 3.0 : Playing Japs in Pbem.
Our latest mails were 'game sucks, got 2d UK div in Saigon - how come'
Then : 'game sucks, have been trying for 2 turns to ship 2 LCU's from Columbo to Dacca, TF went nowhere, found my 2 div idle, but with low readiness.'
etc.
TF have a tendency to stay stuck. or disappear ...
in ver 3.2.
I tried first move (anyone wants it - ok for me) with japs, i take against IA Darwin, Rangoon, and lots of islands. I don't think it is possible for anyone to beat japs anywhere in the first months, by then you control half of India (if not all) and half of Australia (if not all).
best regards
Ben

I still have an OLD, OLD, OLD game titled simply "Midway". I have another REALLY OLD game for the, I am ashamed to admit that I had one of these, Atari 800 computers that centered around Midway and the Solomons. Don't have the Atari but I still have the game with original box, maps, manual, the Works! Anybody beat that?

Nice hint, but how long do I have to wait? I have switched Dutch and UK air groups to the Wirraway, but so far I haven't been offered the P-40 upgrade. It's 11/42 in my current game and I have more than 1700 Warhawks in the pool. Actually I have never been offered any upgrade for any a/c type in this game so far. That's with v3.2. Does production has to be on copmputer control in order to get the upgrade offer?

If it's Nov. '42, there's a bug in your game. You should be getting all kinds of upgrade offers--especially from TBD Devastators to TBF Avengers. One thing to remember: only squadrons on "Day Combat" missions will get a chance to upgrade. (Don't ask me to explain or justify this!)
