French morale popup

Post by pjg100 »

In a PBEM game (playing Allies) it's the end of the early Feb 1940 turn. I just received a popup that French morale falls as the Germans approach Paris. However, the only French hex that any Axis unit controls is the hex southwest of Luxembourg. So this would appear to be an error. I hope that it doesn't actually trigger a drop in French NM or unit morale.

If you mean hex 93,41 then that is correct, because the Maginot Line has been outflanked and so morale will fall.

However, on reviewing a map of the Maginot Line, I think it should continue into that hex, in which case it's not so much the script that needs changing, but the size of the Maginot Line?

Interesting suggestion Bill - would change the dynamic of the assault on France somewhat, tend to channel it more westerly. Probably a good idea.

Question is, what impact will this have on French defense and therefore on game balance. Maybe it could be a good thing, but that's something to think about.

Perhaps extend the Maginot line one hexside, so it covers the hexside between Luxembourg and 93,41? That would tend to prevent the early GE attack through Lux on the second or third turn that pushes into 93,41. Would require GE to attack Belgium in order to flank the Maginot line, which I think would be a good thing. Perhaps make this a regular fortification instead of a full on 6-entrenchment Maginot hexside, in order to avoid changing the dynamic too much.

An interesting change for sure. I think it's worth trying out, taking that hex is really popular even in 1939.

Is it a too big nerf to Axis? I don't know, but it makes their life more challenging, and more reliant on weather. Especially if France plays conservatively, capital will probably move to Bordeaux after Paris falls, which may buy them additional 1-2 turns - and that's serious. But it's a bigger picture case.

I've reviewed this again and I think the best solution is to amend the National Morale script so that it isn't triggered by the Germans taking hex 93,41.

Sources appear to differ on the exact strength of French fortifications in that hex in real life, and while it is tempting to add something, there is the potential effect it might have on balance that needs to be taken into account.
