Antwerp Port peculiarities

I've noticed twice, once in a current game, and once in another previous game where I was Entente, something peculiar with Antwerp's port. In a previous game, my opponent took Antwerp and nearly surrounded a UK corp which was right next to it. I saw that I had the option to transport it out by sea, so I clicked on it, and lo and behold, it popped into a transport using Antwerp's port. I informed my opponent (a personal friend) and we moved on, forgetting about the issue.

In a current game, which is wrapping up soon, a similar situation came up again early in the campaign. This time, it was a French marine unit that was right next to the city and port. It got boxed in, but I figured no problem, I'll AV him out. When the time came to unass out of there, I got both the transport and AV option. Well, I took the cheaper and faster option, and transported it out of there, seemingly through Antwerp's port, which my opponent just occupied.

I maybe guilty of an exploit, which is not my nature. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this here, or at any other port for that matter? I don't know if this is a bug, something I've missed about ports, or something special about Antwerp itself. ( I remember the 'Antwerp fortification bug' where you had to click on entrench to get the fort to kick in, which got fixed.)

Hi OldCrowBalthazor,

I don't consider it a bug as the city and port are two separate things. You can have several ports for one city/town or a port without a city/town hex adjacent.
Just consider it like a beachhead occupied by your unit (think Dunkirk or DDay).
It was adjacent to the port (meaning control of it) before enemy units took the city so you'll retain control of the port as long as your unit remains adjacent to it.

Meaning you can use naval or amphibious transport in and out of the port. You can also use it to "move" a unit to another nearby hex (if one the other hexes adjacent to the port is available) through the port even if that unit isn't able to do it by land (not anough MPs or impassable terrain).

(the hard part is it can sometimes be difficult to know wich land hexes are "connected" to a port though the mas is usually pretty clear about that)
That said, control doesn't always equal to use as if port supply drops below 5 (bombing or blockade) you won't be able to use it for naval transport.

You'll still have the option for amphibious transport with marine units wether you control the port or not even if supply is low.

Thanks, all your points make perfect sense.

I've travelled to many places where the 'port' is a separate entity geographically from the town/city its associated with and didn't think this through.
