Natural Disasters

Post by Daza99 »

This might of been already suggested?

Earthquakes, forest fires (due to lightening strikes, volcano ash, trouble makers/arson), volcano eruptions.

I do not suggest this will be a regular occurrence for some of these, forest fire would be more likely than a volcano or earthquake. But there could be percentage chance of occurrence rolls for each of these based on planet and other variables. It might be like 5% chance of an earth quake checked every 40 turns and if there is one it could be a small 5.0 one or a 8 (maybe a roll for which using percentage chance of which is set when gen the world) and of course where they occur. It might be the player in course of a game has no quakes. Where the quake occurs, there could be a strength of an effect that reduces from ground zero across a diameter reducing - x per hex as it spreads out. So your main city might be at ground zero or on outer edges of it or just beyond it and is merely felt. Which player learns about in the end of turn reports.

Buildings being damaged and fear increasing, possibly if unrest is already rife in a city it will increase because of damaged buildings would be easier to loot etc.

Volcano erupting could alter hexes around it to lava so if you have a city or resource next to it they get wiped out. However there could be an option maybe via Applied Science Council to have a hex or volcano checked out for likelihood of eruption which is a guestimate. Its not like all the volcanoes on a map will be blowing up, it could be just chance of one and might be rare in that. But i think it would be interesting to have sometimes natural events, even if in a report it happened elsewhere.

Also having such events might occur to other regimes who might (being your neighbor) reach out to you for financial help or ask for specific units to be sent to help clean up, opening up for civilian units you can move around the map. Water-bomber plane or chopper or just general units that are sent as man-power. Improving relations. There could be a chance of a rare event in that too, of helpers making a botch of a rescue effort etc.

Forest fires could also open up to player purposely burning forest hexes down in their area, controlled burns which might go out of control, for making it harder for enemies to approach cities from near by forests for the extra entrenchment (especially in pvp).
