Laying mines

Post by Pack Rat »

Engineers have the option to lay mines. Do they have a limit as to how many they have? I assume it takes one full turn of no activity and no surpression to lay one.

So far as I know: Engineers can lay their mines continuesly mine/turn and it dos not seem to have any limitations of how many they dig out of their backbag. Number of mines layed does not affect to the satchels they have. Realistic? Best I've seen was one group laying mines nine turns, one on each turn. Call that a surprise when you forgot this option 'On' and get too much traffic at the field, and your own tanks drive on them...

Hey Pack Rat...that question doesn't have anything to do with the battle we just fought does it? ;-)

From what I have seen with mine...no set amount of time for them to lay a mine, at least one turn but some do not always "lay" 1 per turn. Sometimes it takes more. Not sure what squad quality applies to this. Some don't seem like they ever lay them, even when nobody is harrassing them, or trying to run them over with KT's and Moebelwagens...but others seem to just drop them like losing tickets at the race track. But with 20k buy points, you sure can purchase a ton of these little factories of destruction. LOL

Its not hard to run over what you placed either, especially if you get careless and let the cpu choose the route that a unit moves. Snow and craters also obscure them...

Laying times are mostly depenable by the terrain mines are digged. 65 exp engineers hardly knows what to do with mine, 90exp play frisbee with them...

Check out page 82 of rule book,"leg engineers may lay minefields during a battle. They must be facing the hex they to lay mines in, and the the unit status display must be to "lay mines in front of unit."" Okay, now excuse me while I pontificate, I've been a combat engineer for 21 years. I love this game but, the mine rules drive me crazy. One, in the game a minefield is a minefield. Real world, countless, AP(anti-personnel)[i don't want to insult anybodies intelligence, remember I'm pontificating],AT(anti-tank), AP/AT(both), decoy/phoney(sneaky bastards), surface laid AT(need a vehicle, plus it's fast) and there's variations of these listed above.
The problem, mines have mass, in other words they pack some weight. AT's anywhere from 15 to 30 lbs. AP anywhere from 1 to 8 lbs. So, your telling me a squad, 8-10 men, without a truck, or carrier is going to waltz a cross the battlefield sowing death and destruction? Okay, that's part of the logistics side. Now, the intelligence side, do think engineers, other than Soviets, just go out there and toss mines about without recording their location? Remember, a mine is a terrible thing to lose. Takes time to record. Alright, end of sermon.

Please tell me this was a pun intended. I lost my "mine" along time ago, just ask my wife. I'm snatching this for a sig. Image

This was probably the only way laying of mines could be handled. I know it was a feature I have wanted in the game since SP1 first came out. To be able to make this more realistic would allow the programing of some other very neat things. I'm thinking ammo trucks running out of ammo and needing to get to an ammo dump and the like.

What, you think that joke has never been told while recovering a minefield. From what I understand the game engine is loaded. so, modications are limited. What I think should be done, if possible. Two types, AT or AP. AT's are considered surface laid(also explains the fast breeching) by mech engineers, one squad, no problem. Additional hexes, bring the ammo trucks forward. AP, two or three squads, first hex, then bring the ammo trucks forward for any subsequent hexes. Also, I think a nice touch, would be the phony minefields.
