The mix of shorter scenarios?
I suspect that most PBEM games will played under the shorter scenarios.
Each shorter scenario will have a duration from time “A” to time “Z”.
My preference is that there also be 2 shorter scenarios. The first would run from time “A” to time “K” and the other run from time “L” to time “Z”.
Currently in UV there are a number of scenarios that start at time “A” and end at different times and there are a series that start at odd times and all end at odd times.
Or to rephrase it, within each sector:
-one scenario to cover a particulair time period.
-2 further scenarios to cover both halves of that time period
-4 further scenarios that cover each quarter of that time period
Each shorter scenario will have a duration from time “A” to time “Z”.

......a game that has to retail at $500 and takes another year to test.
I've seen the editor. You should be able to create stuff to your hearts content if you tire of PBEMing the smaller scenarios that come with the game.
Cheers
Let's see, there 6 theatres. Each theatre requires 7 scenarios. Double that to allow for what if's. Double it again to allow for earlier/later time periods. Now that makes....Or to rephrase it, within each sector:

It makes 42 scenarios. UV has almost half that number and its only a quarter of the game.
I like continuity
For any long scenario it would be handy if it were also split into 2 halves But this game will be so long, that it would also need to be split into quarters.
That gives us continuity
Perhaps the 2 “halves” could be eliminated.
If the scenarios are too long, they will not be played by PBEM. Then the chances of creating a third game ( UV in the Med????) are much reduced.

I'm not sure how you get continuity from that.
If you play something like "Central Pacific 1941-43" till it's completion, you will end with a unique game situation in regards to VPs, base ownership and forces. Then starting a "follow on" scenario like "Central Pacific 1944-45" will not give you continuity unless the starting situation exactly matches the previous games ending situation.
I wouldn't neccesarily focus on the Dec '41-'45 concept, it wont be your only choice for a long scenario.

Do you consider UV scens 17 or 19 too long? The smaller WitP scenarios would probably be similar in length, some maybe even shorter. Perfect for PBEMs.If the scenarios are too long, they will not be played by PBEM. Then the chances of creating a third game ( UV in the Med????) are much reduced.

I prefer a scenario about 60 turns long. If the turn length is set to 2 days that makes a scenario about 120 days long or 4 months.
But I prefer to play a number of smaller scenarios because it provides all the flavours of the game. If I could play 3 scenarios per year and play each one once from each side that amounts to 6 games or 2 months per game.
But I cannot play a turn every night so the number of turns cannot exceed 45. If the turn length is set to 2 days then we have a scenario lasting 90 days
OTOH, I will take 4 weeks annual leave
Of the remaining 48 weeks I’ll probably play 5 turns a week or 240 turns
I’ll probably spend 10 weekends away making 30 days
That leaves 210 turns per year.
If I set the turn length to 2 days that makes a scenario 420 days long or about 14 months.
I note scenario 19 is about 20 months long. Yes, I consider that to be too long.

You are obviously restricted by your circumstances.
I actually prefer shorter scenarios as well and what I've seen so far in WitP looks promising. It also plays faster than UV when the scenarios are a similar (theatre) size to UV.

Hi
"TOKYO SHIMBUN
The Emperor today ordered all trees over 3 meters in height to be cut down. They are to be replaced by Bonzai trees."
I'm not retreating, I'm attacking in a different direction!

OK, so we just have to use a guillotine! No sense in losing your head over things!
You can run but you'll die tired!
The short stuff is for practice. Its the long game that gives you the real flavor of the game.Originally posted by Raverdave

Well, I don't care what kind of case Raver keeps his nuts in. There is no point in playing WitP unless you play the whole war. Otherwise, you might just as well fiddle around with games that are designed to be campaign size, like UV.
I have always seen UV as merely the warmup to the main event.
