18.1.2. Effect of Italian Surrender Bug

Post by Seminole »

In the Allied logistics phase on the turn the Italians
surrender, as well as every turn after that in which the
below conditions are met, there is a chance that some
hexes in Italy, Sardinia and Corsica will change to Allied
control. Hexes with coordinates X>151 and Y>253 or
hexes that are part of Corsica or Sardinia may change.
German units in Italy or Corsica can prevent the
switchover. All German units prevent a change in any
hex that is within a number of hexes of the unit equal
to 1+(unit CV/2).
So a German unit with a CV of 9 would
prevent a switchover in any hex within 5 hexes of the
unit.

This isn't working correctly, as I have a 14 CV (now 15 CV) unit in southern Italy and hexes are flipping within the proscribed range. The result is destroyed rail, precluding the movement of troops and supplies. The terrain flips back to my control during the Allied logistics phase (by having the screen on this area I can see the hexes that flip, and confirmed the rail is destroyed when I just got my turn back) because the enemy doesn't have a connection to it.

It's happened two turns in a row.

I have a unit with 16 CV that is only protecting hexes within a range of 4.
Did this formula change?

It’s ruined a well setup forward defense because over a dozen rail hexes have been destroyed and I can’t count on supplying my troops should I move them forward to take advantage of the enemy’s weakness.

To compound the aggravation Army Group C decided it best to dispatch my repair units to fix rail on Sardinia instead of feeding the fight at the frontlines. I guess I need to return them to HQ and then try to assign them to corps commanders instead, but that AI decision making could probably use a tweak in weighting the importance of relative sectors of the battlefield.

I think even if you assign the construction units to corps HQ, the AI will assign them to Sardinia.

I understood that repair units could only be dispatched by an HQ within its command range.
Am I confusing this with WitE, or making up rules in my head?

I've had SHAEF send construction units to Italy.

Was the distance >90 hexes from SHAEF?

Yes, Southern Italy to Birmingham (where I stash SHAEF) is about 125 hexes.

Good news: construction units I re-assigned to 10th Army HQ last turn were not dispatched to repair anything in Sardinia this turn.
Bad news: construction units I re-assigned to 10th Army HQ last turn were not dispatched to repair anything this turn.

Sigh.

I may yet be defeated by the logistics AI.
Shame we can't dispatch these units to repair the rail we think needs to be repaired.
It would be worth the time it takes to see it actually happen instead of randomly, if at all.

The automated flow of supplies is still disappointing.
I prioritize depots and my quartermasters just don't care. They send supplies to lower priority depots and ignore higher priority depots.
I'd rather do these things manually to see that they actually get done than deal with this.

Good news: construction units I re-assigned to 10th Army dispatched only within the 15 hex command range.
Bad news: they went to repair airfields I intend to abandon instead of the rail lines I need to feed my front line depots.

Sigh.

Moving them to a corps HQ to see what happens. I may just have to give up on defending the deep south in Italy, but this is terrain I want to fight over!

More bad news.

It appears that the AI simply will not try to repair rail hexes east of X-151.

I don't see anywhere that this is documented.

It sucks because while I've captured two divisions worth of paratroopers with my forward defense, but I'm getting murdered in the vehicle department due to this bug.

I guess in the future I'll put FZs and onmap units on top of the critical rail in the this zone if I want to hold it, but nothing is going to get my trucks back, and I'm likely going to have to abandon a very defensible area because the rail isn't getting repaired to the depots I have. [:@]
