This game is freaking amazing.

I mean seriously! A game that is so vast in scope and so detailed but still can get stories like this about such 'small' things...

1) Lone Buffalo pilot likely left at his AF base in the NW Philippines probably because his unit was pulled back South but he was left there with his damaged plane which got fixed and so he carried out his last orders...which is to intercept a flight of 53 FIFTY THREE Japanese bombers in his Buffalo. He comes screaming in...shoots down one bomber! Circles around and shoots down another! Is out of ammo so withdraws.

Or the 5 PT boats hanging around in the same area. Area THICK with Japanese planes and ships. Suffer 2 air attacks which do nothing. At night, twice...2 days in a row they drink some whiskey and rush a HUGE Japanese invasion convoy complete with a bazillion destroyers, light cruisers, I think 2 heavy cruisers and a battleship. They come rushing in... at night so they must not be that stupid...to attack. Shells raining down all around them...closing...more shells...closing...more shells...let loose the torpedoes! turn around and run with shells all around them. Twice over 2 days without taking any hits. Of course, their torpedoes missed...

I have a PT Boat with a skipper whose Naval and Aggression were in their twenties torpedo three sinks in three consecutive nights. I think that some if not all of those ships sank.

Was that the kitchen sink he attacked or the bathroom one? Or maybe the utility sink in the laundry area?

This game is certainly amazing. It is similar to a Russian Matryoshka nesting doll.

There seems to always be another level that will delight you even after years of play.

He attacked all of those sinks. Of course, they were on ships at the time![;)]

Here's another example:
A small 900 ton Australian patrol boat encounters a giant enemy fleet, engages it at over 10,000 yards, takes fire from numerous heavy combat ships, is hit 4 times and causes the enemy fleet to run for safety. The Swan suffered only 29 system damage and the fire was out immediately. In the ship data it says that the last hit was from a 36cm/45 which is the main battery of the BB.

If that BB was firing AP and not HE, the hull of the target was so thin that the shell would not slow down enough to explode.

The Japanese TF was a carrier TF which is designed to retreat from surface threats - of any size.

Who knows what type of shells the other 3 hits were? One of the hits caused a fire. Looks like they came from a CA and some destroyers. Quite a day for the Swan!

I have had several engagements where single 'destroyer types' have disrupted or appeared to impact ops out of all proportion to relative TF sizes. Not whinin, just sayin. After all, a couple PBs almost ruined the Doolittle mission

I would also say that the 36cm/45 was likely a passthrough hit, an exploding 36cm HE Shell would have likely one-shot the Swan or at least severely damaged it.
But it is an achievement on its own that the Hyuga hit such a small target from 11000-12000 Yards away, with its Main Battery, in the first place [:D]

And yes, this is truly a magnificent game and you guys seem to have found your own unique way in enjoying it [;)]

Here is some more info on this action against the Swan. In the combat animation there are these statements:
"Fire Control System Damaged"
"Upper works hit"
"Upper works carried away"
"hit by 12.7cm 40T89 AA" (there are 2 of these)

Here is a screenshot from the combat animation of when the Swan was hit by Hyuga.
Interesting!

My one complaint about this is that fleeing from these combats tends to override their overall strategic orders (e.g., remain on station, proceed to this hex, etc.) and make them return to base. It can muck up an entire battle. Have had that happen several times from otherwise inconsequential surface contacts with pissant tuna boats.

Okay, the Swan is definitely in some serious luck streak [:D]
And the Crew of the Hyuga is likely biting their Nails of at the moment.

This is why watching at least some combat animations is important.

I always escape out of aerial bombardments of ground targets as there is really nothing to see, but air bombing of naval targets and especially surface naval fights should always be watched to learn what was hit by what.

A report of 15 shell hits on a ship doesn't tell you if those hits were from 20mm AA guns or 16" naval rifles.

BTW there also was a report in the combat animation that the name of the TF commander of the Japanese fleet was Tamon Yamiguchi. That was more intel. Every little bit helps. It appears that he was put in command at a cost of some PP.

I would be more worried about the TF composition. Any sub the TF will step over will have a shot on the big ships. Add DDs.
