Work has begun on the AI!

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Work has begun on the AI!

Post by alexvand »

Yay Steve!

So glad to see you starting work on the AI. I've not been on these forums for a while, busy playing other games, but I'm always excited to come back to WiF and it's great to see that this game is still being improved.

(I'll just ignore all the grumpy people. I've been waiting for this game on computer since the mid 90's when I first heard that it would be computerized. I'm just happy to see it actually happening!)

Just don't set your expectations too high.

It is going to be different than a smart human and there will be a performance cost.

It might help for smaller scenarios like the introductory ones, but a Global War will just be a bear.

This game is pretty complex with a lot of moving parts.

In case people have missed it, in this post Steve is requesting scrap lists and saved setups to help with the AIO.

+1, cant ever see myself playing this game again until they have the smaller scenarios.

In fact it would be great if someone would clarify if the scenarios even remain within scope of the remaining work as they seemed to have dropped off the updates. TBH I wouldn't even be mad, it just would save me checking forum.

Some perspective may be valuable here. Steve took on this project about 17 years ago because he wanted to do the AI. There wouldn't be a MWiF without him. I think he has shown the patience of Job thus far, doing everything else but the AI.

I'll get to them sooner or later.

On a plus note, I get my first Covid vacination in two days. So the odds of me dying in the near future have been significantly reduced.[:)]

Just got mine. Looking forward to seeing some old friends at pub. I say 'at a pub' because both of my local ones have went out of business

I wanted to get into this, but very much like to mess around with it for awhile vs. AI before moving to PBEM or Multiplay. Sadly that never did happen. Hopefully its not too late and not even sure how many players still like playing this.

Besure to have it set, incase a player wish to play a single nation vs. another, while other nations are controlled by AI. Is this the whole world we talking here or just scenarios of part of the world?

WiF is not the kind of game that would work well with single nations allied to AI nations against an all-AI opponent. You'd be better off setting it to AI vs AI and just watching. There's plenty of challenge enough in creating an AI for one side.

The initial work is being done on the Barbarossa scenario with hopes that can expand into a version of human vs AI for the main game.

Isn't the AI going to be a paid for expansion? Sure I read that ages ago.

After such a long wait, looking forward to dusting the manuals off the shelf and playing against the A.I.

Hurray! I bought the game on launching day to support this Herculean effort, but knew I would not really play it until it got an AI. I've been coming back to check if there's any change 1 or 2 times a year since, and this time it held a very happy such. Pleasing one can sadly conflict with what other have in their priority wish list, and knowing there's so much to be done on other parts that is important to more people, I've just been quietly patient hoping it eventually would get there - as it seems to do now. Thank you so much for your very hard work through all this years!

Exactly the same in my case :)
And it looks like the AIO is progressing nicely :)

Happy new year, Steve! I am - as I have been all these years :) - very, very impressed by your extraordinary commitment and - indeed Herculean - effort!
