What does Engagement Stance mean for Fleets?

What does Engagement Stance mean for Fleets?

Hi,

If I have a fleet with eg an attack posture (eg it has a posture target and posture range set), what is the effect of the fleet engagement stance (the one that I can vary with the comma key)?

It seems to me that these settings are contradictory. How can a fleet with attack posture only "engage when attacked"?
