question about escorts

are they automatic?

It seems like if there are fighters near any Air Mission, some airplanes will help as escort.

The manual only mentions about the green/purple colour for the fighters range, but It's not clear if they work automatically.

from my experience I just dont bother with escorts for ground support. For missions which are carried out in the air execution phase you should still use escorts. As you said fighters in range will still be there for ground support and if you check the battle details the fighters start with more altitude than if you just put them at escorting, giving you a nice advantage over the enemy fighters.

I play with ground support - escorts only (no bombers).

From my experience this means there are always my fighters up in a battle and they draw enemy fighters and especially in 41 it is an easy way to completly annihilate them.

and how do you add escorts to a mission like ground attack? simply adding fighters, or with the minimum escort values?
