Soviet Mechanized Divisions after March 42

Post by horza66 »

This is one of those bugs I hate to report: I still have effective, useful mech divisions as the Soviet player in May 42. According to the manual these should disappear by March 42. I would not report, but they are making me feel dirty.

We'll have to check to see if there is some code that actually is supposed to make the units go away in March 42 (or if this is one of those urban myths that managed to stay in the manual). Sounds like that may no longer be the case. The data is set up so as soon as any of those divisions become depleted, they will rename into rifle divisions. So if you can keep them from getting depleted, you may get to keep them. Will need to look into it. Most tank divisions are set up in the data to convert to tank brigades on turn 32 if they haven't yet become depleted and converted, but there is no such data for the Mech divisions. My guess is if we want them to convert by March, the easiest thing will be to add that to their data.

This makes sense - my surviving Mech divisions have been under good leadership and kept in the second line on Reserve orders. My tank divisions have disappeared as expected.

My main concern was that there might be some corruption of the game going on, as I could see some other odd behaviour. If you check the logistics entry for this turn you'll see that the Guards Armor percentage is 0, whereas I have a few GTC already. (This seems related to receiving my first Guards promotion for a motorised brigade, as the percentage was correct in previous turns). Also, if you check the wins on my tank brigades, there are quite a number with 10+ and no Guards promotion. Guards promotion on motorised units seems much harder to get than with line infantry. Of course this could be as intended (having a full 35% contingent of GTCs in April 42 always seemed gamey) but no mention in the manual of this either.

We're going to leave it as is, so we'll be removing the March 42 rule. Basically the mech divisions will stick around as long as they don't go depleted.

Thanks for letting us know it's WAD. I'll see what I can do to keep at least one still alive as a Mech division into 1945, and take a screenshot. ;-)

Also, as to my other concerns: my Tank Brigades eventually promoted to Guards (it does seem slower than leg infantry) and the percentage of Guards Armour fixed itself next turn.

BTW, there were a couple of Mech/Tank Divisions that I believe survived the war in the Far Eastern Front.
