Warplan Pacific - best of its genre

Post by gwgardner »

I've been playing computer games for thirty years or so. Warplan and now Warplan Pacific are the best operational/strategic PC games I've ever played. I was a playtester for both, I have hundreds of hours into both games. I'm hoping that new players will give Warplan Pacific a good, thorough runthrough - go through the learning curve, try various tactics and strategies - they, you, will be rewarded for that effort with just a great game.

I play close to history, I don't try gamey play. My payoff is a game that gives me a 'sense' of what really happened. Other players do like to game the game - that's fun for them, and they can find all kinds of things to fiddle with - they'll have fun too.

My point is, if you're on the fence, if you read criticism, don't get dissuaded by it. It's a great game.

I agree 100% a great game. As an old gamer my first war board game Avalon Hill Tactics II in 1965, first computer war game 1980 on an Atari 800, the Warplan series hits a sweet spot. I can not write enough good things about Mr. Sousa. His attentiveness to us his customers, his professionalism in answering all questions sets him apart. Below is an example and I quote "As players start playing it and I get feedback the A.I. will be adjusted just like WP has over the last 18 months to improve the A.I. In a recent interview Mr. Sousa talked about his future projects, I for one can not wait for the continued development of the WarPlan series and his future projects.

So playing 'close to history' as you say, do you invade the DEI on turn one? As that is not even close to being historical if you do.

Well you are right but you are also wrong. We'd need an alternative setup for Japan where they concentrate more on DEI instead of Pearl Harbor, etc.

Perhaps some transports should be moved further away so they cannot reach DEI on turn 1.

My only complaint so far is that the Allies have 0 transport on the first few turns. I'd like the ability to at least move one small unit per turn.

yea this is a little frustrating, i tried disbanding the army in mindanao but the points go to the phillipines which falls in a few turns. The only way to hold out is split the armies near manila.. im not an expert but i live in california and airplanes fly to hawaii in a matter of hours was this not possible in 1942?

The Allies have zero transports to simulate the situation in the Pacific at the time of the attack, which was complete disorganization. With hindsight a human player can easily block locations ramming and jamming units into positions. They will still die but the delay for the Axis advance will escalate. The game is about time and the Axis should have the leverage in power early while the Allies have it late.

You did the right thing, now that i been playing a little longer i understand that design choice it avoids some pretty game breaking moves in the first few days of the war

Absolutely. WarPlan and WarPlan Pacific are, IMHO, already classics that will stand the test of the time as some of the best PC wargames ever made!
