Subs, Convoys, Escorts Oh My !!

Post by stjeand »

So a question if anyone happens to know...

Subs in Warplan Pacific are 40% weaker than subs in Warplan Europe...

Did Convoy Route / Escort damage change accordingly?

My first Japanese raid on the convoy lanes ended in complete disaster.

4 subs enter
2 subs leave

4 subs took 10 damage in total...2 were sunk outright and 2 each took 2 damage.

Seemed extremely excessive which begged the question...

5 subs can be in a zone. It shouldn't change the outcomes really. Remember there are sub hunters now.

Well it was turn 6...not a single ship from the Allies was at sea other than a few subs.

I was just surprised by the huge amount of hits with just 10 escorts in the lane.

The subs hit 0 escorts...the 10 escorts did 10 hits on subs in one lane.
3 hits on a sub in another.

I guess I will see about stacking them...though suspect subs will be better listening buoys than attacking convoy lanes due to being so weak.

I might have to scale the hits.

But generally you should have 5 subs in a lane vs a convoy.

When you add in the modes it gets more confusing.

If I place a DD or CV group on one of my own convoy routes to protect it from subs, do I need to be in Raider or Fleet mode? And is there a downside to being in either mode on a friendly convoy route?

Raider is just hiding or raiding...not actively searching...

So they have to be in Fleet mode.

Fleet mode, okay thanks Dan.

And I wish you hadn't said "raiding" at the end of your post. Now I am confused again. What do you mean Raiding. I thought Raiding mode was only for sneaking around and hiding. That you were invisible and untouchable.

God help me. So if I am out looking for trouble I thought I had to be in Fleet mode. Now you say I should be in Raider Mode to be on the offensive. I wish I drank. This would be a good excuse to get drunk.

From the manual, so raider mode lowers the ability of the enemy to spot your fleet and it won't engage anything except convoys.

Mode – Fleets may raise or lower their ability to search and be found
by its mode. Fleets may change modes if they have 2 operation points
available or are in port.
Fleet – The fleet is actively searching for other fleets to engage in
combat. Fleets that perform an invasion or a beach disembark are
automatically placed in fleet mode.
Raider – The fleet purposely tries to avoid combat except when
attacking convoys for production or supply. When the fleet is in
raider mode, the reconnaissance level of the hex is lowered by 1.
Fleets in raider mode can’t attack enemy fleets but can defend vs
attack. A fleet may not change modes once it moves.
