Those who have gone....

Post by DD696 »

I returned from Texas last Tuesday evening at 0006 am. My brother (not a blood brother, but a step brother with whom we became strong brothers over the last 60 years), anyway, he was given 30 days to live. Cancer, brain, lungs and bone. He let me know, and 3 days later I was there with him to provide daytime hospice care in Paris, Texas, for 12-15 hours a day. After 16 days he died during the night when one of his sons had night time duty. It was, no Bob, no more. I had to do things I never thought I would ever do - cleaning wounds from which the hip bone was exposed. The hospice nurse gave me the courage to do these things. When I saw that bone while turning him with her I cried. She said that's what we expect. Grab that wet wipe and help me clean the wound.

I did. She said the right thing to me and I did what was required. Thank you, hospice nurse. Bob died. No Bob, no more.

I went to McKinney to visit a daughter and grand kids for a week. I have lost 3 younger than I. It hurts.

Condolences to you and Bob's family.

My mother passed away last July, she was 3 thousand miles away but my brother in law held his phone up to my mom's ear and she could hear me tell her that I loved her and that I was sorry I was not there to hold her hand one last time, but I was able to read Psalms 18 through 20 to her and she passed peacefully with the last verses of Psalms 20.

Cherish the memories you have and comfort one another.

Oh man, that's hard. I've never seen anything like you went through. Lost many loved ones in the last few years, but never saw beneath their skin. God bless you sir.

I thank all of you. My brother said numerous times when I was there that he was blessed to have such family. I don't know about being blessed, but I do know on that last night of his life when I left, I said "I love you. Bob. I am proud to have had you as a brother". He managed to mouth the words "I love you too.

Thank you for the support. He was a good man.

You were there when he needed you the most. It did not take long for you to get there either. He also did not die alone, that is very important.

I know that a lot of people put their supposed "loved ones" into a nursing home or assisted living then don't even bother to visit them. Even when they live in the same town, they may not visit them in a year - if at all. A lot of people don't even visit their "friends" in the nursing home either - even living in the same town.
