Question on Fleet interdiction

Post by amhendrick »

What does "Night Action vs. Carrier group" mean, and how do I avoid it? I had what should have been a better fleet, and it came out poorly. Is that just the random nature of naval combat, or did the Japanese get an advantage from a night interdiction?

The situation is: While I was busy in the Solomons, the Japanese invaded Hawaii. My carrier fleet came in from the north to avoid the Japanese CVs and was interdicted by the Haruna and 3 destroyer groups.

Speaking of the Japanese CVs, I thought the limit was 6, but this fleet has 12 . . . I'll load a pic if I can figure out how.

I am enjoying the game a lot, and appreciate the helpful comments here in the forum.

As far as I know there is know you can control when your fleets are in night mode, but you cannot control when the enemy gets a night action. (Just as you cannot control when CVs get the Ambush modifier or Submarines get the Surprise modifier.

It looks to me that you just got unlucky.

The naval combat in this game is one of the best things and one of the most frustrating things. It is the best in that the outcomes can be so varied and it accurately portrays how just about anything could happen. That is of course what makes it frustrating. Just like the Japanese you can steam in with your large fleet that out matches the enemy only to be humbled.

You can have up to 20 naval units in a stack. Up to 6 of them can be CVs.
Make sure that you did not get attacked by two separate groups.

I'll take a look at the A.I... I assume this was an A.I. game that has 12 CVs in a stack.

Yes, I have version 1.00.01, and yes I am the allies vs. the AI as Japan.

It's happened a few times in this game. The fleet shows up in the same spot at 10-12 CV strength. It doesn't attack or interdict, but will defend if attacked.

I'm impressed that the AI mounted an invasion of Hawaii. Were you using the 'random' computer plan?

Yes, AI is set to random. It took Johnston and Midway first and then invaded Hawaii. Hawaii invasion was not successful though.
