Why Isn't Marsellies a Port Source Type Depot?

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Why Isn't Marsellies a Port Source Type Depot?

Post by cfulbright »

Marseilles is a type 2 (Port) depot, even though it's a size 9 port. Genoa, Venice, and Trieste, among many other large but smaller than Marseilles ports, are type 3 (Port Source) depots. Why is Marseilles not in their league?

type is not a size issue but reflects the role, so port sources can send out freight (but not receive), ports can receive but not send out (this is changeable in WiTE2 but I think hard wired in WiTW).

I'd say the 3 Italian ports are set as source to give the Axis player some capacity to ship out freight to the islands and any ports that are cut off by land by the Allies.

In an ideal world, they should flip to port (#2) if the W Allies ever take them but its scarcely a big issue as Livorno and the smaller Tuscan ports give the allies a fair bit of port capacity and its likely by that stage of the game the Allies are much weaker in Italy than they might have been in 1943?

Roger - that makes sense.

Port sources can't receive freight? Then that's a big problem for Antwerp, Amsterdam, and Rotterdam, among some other ports on the continent that the Allies will want to use.

Hi Cary

just checked some old game saves. Looks like they are all sending ports when axis controlled and becomes normal receiving port when the Allies capture them.
