Sheer enjoyment

Post by beads »

Not sure this belongs here (or anywhere on this forum tbh), but I had to tell _someone_ who understands how much I am enjoying this game.

I played many, many hours of Harpoon 2 and 3 years ago, but kept running into bugs that I knew weren't going to be fixed which became very frustrating.

I had some epic battles with scenarios like the Falklands and US/USSR in the North Atlantic, and generally had a bloody good time.

I only chanced across CMO a few days ago, immediately googled it for comparisons with Harpoon, and am now working my way through the tutorials. I've got a lot to learn about the non-naval bits, but I'm gradually getting back into it and enjoying the play just as much as I used to in Harpoon.

Brilliant game, and the care and craft that has gone into it are very clear.

It might sound silly, but one thing I miss is the little movies from Harpoon - I never tired of seeing an aircraft or missile launch at my command, and the CRRRUMP while watching a missile slam into a ship was deeply satisfying!

Which reminds me of a serious question I should probably post in the proper place - Harpoon would tell you how many missiles were incoming for a particular target, and I haven't worked out how to do that in CMO yet. Useful for checking that all targets are being engaged!

Now I'm off to look around for some Falklands scenarios...

Great to hear you are enjoying it.
There I contributed with a scenario named "María & Victoria" depicting ARA San Luis but with working torpedoes.

Enjoy!

Beads,

Welcome to CMO! It's light years ahead of Harpoon - you're going to love it.

As for the target engagement question: a target that has a weapon assigned to it will have a number appear on the left side (I believe its the bottom left corner of the target icon?). So if you fire 10 missiles at a target, you'll see a "10" in the corner of the target icon.

Hi beads

Great to hear that you enjoy the game.
I have a similar back ground from Harpoon so I know how you feel[:D]
I have played CMANO/CMO almost daily from the release in 2013.

Regarding the number of weapons aimed at a target.
If a target consists of more than a single unit, like a SAM site or an airport, there will be a small number in the top left corner of the target that shows how many units there are.

When you launch a weapon against that target another number below the first number will show how many weapons have been launched against that target.

If it´s a single unit target like a building or a ship/plane, there´s only the number in bottom left corner showing allocated weapons.

In the picture, there´s a SAM site consisting of two units being targeted by one weapon, a single unit ground facility and a ship both also being target by a single weapon.

Hope this helped.

Søren

Thanks for the responses!

Also thanks for showing me where to see the incoming missiles info (d'oh!).

Welcome aboard beads

Many of us cut our teeth on Harpoon, my first copy was way back in '89 -

CMO it to Harpoon what the USS Nimitz is to the original USS Langley

I had to look up USS Langley!

Interesting to read some of the reviews on Steam, some people just don't seem to get the difference between a simulator like CMO and a lightweight game, which appears to be where most of the bad reviews come from. Must be frustrating for the devs...
