Desert Fox

Post by Fallschirmjager »

God I suck...

whatever skill I had...I lost

Ive been through desert fox before

But the first time I chased the train

This time I played the first mission as normal taking no option and attacking in the day

I got my *** kicked
I took a draw and lost 80% of my force...now I have to defend tripoli
Is this a major setback?

You can win in Tripoli. All is not lost. I would hang in there and try to recoup. If you do win there, you will progress deeper into the desert.

Yep. The train attack is not as easy as it might first appear. It is a raid, behind enemy lines and time is a killer for you. You gotta be in and outa there before British reinforcements swamp you, FJ.

FJ, watch out for those Matildas. They don't die very easily with 37mm AP rounds. Eventually you can burst their ear drums if you bounce enough shot off of them.:D

Then MAYBE they will retreat.

Then you learn why the Germans took the captured ones, repainted them and used them as part of DAK.

There is a battle in Desert Fox, by the way, where you can do just that..sneak into a British repair shop, steal a couple of Matildas and get away.

Any of you DF vets try that one?

Not yet, but I will if I see it. I'm just starting BattleAxe. Have I gone past it already?

Yep, you missed it. It was one of the alternate scenarios. I'll have to look up which one it was...WB

Well, I'll catch it the next time around, or since it sounds so intriguing, if you can find the battle it branches off of, I can see if that was one of the ones I did and replay that one!

Thanks Bill

It was in the battle for Mechili, Jim. Node007, which says:

=================

YOUR ORDERS - El Mechili - April 8th, 1941

Herr Oberst, as you know, your infantry and part of your armor have gone ahead with the fast recon group trying to break through to Mechili.

We want you to take the rest of your Group and catch up with them. Intelligence reports that they may be getting into a tight situation.

You are to take the road leading to Mechili and the observation post that controls the area. Sweep it clean of the enemy so our main forces can move ahead unopposed.

Be aware that the RAF has become extremely active so keep your eye on the sky. Also watch for a Storch observation plane. If it flies low, it is probably the good General checking up on you.

We know of the shortage of fuel. General Rommel has ordered all trucks to be stripped of what they were carrying and return to El Agheila and bring forward only fuel. We should be ready to move within 24 hours. Clear the way for us, Colonel. This is imperative!

==================

There were three alternate battles you could have chosen. This was the third one:

===================

We have a special Night attack mission for you, Herr Oberst. While our other units assault Mechili directly, you are to sweep around the town, flanking it, and find the enemy tank repair facilities.

We won't be using your entire force. Some are needed for the attack on Mechili.

A number of enemy tanks and other vehicles are being repaired to be sent into battle against us. Hit them hard and destroy all the equipment you can. Let's keep the edge we have in this war.

Pay attention, Colonel. This is important!

You have a two fold mission: (1) to destroy as many enemy units as you can and (2) to capture and escape with some of those Matilda tanks with their fine thick armor. We can use them.

You must watch carefully for these Matildas manned by our crews. Once you see them and they are ready to go, help them to exit as quickly as possible along with your raiding force.

You will have motorcycle units to do recon for you and special assault engineers will ride in on some of the tanks to help with the destruction of the enemy vehicles.

Pay special care to the Matilda tanks. We want to capture some of those for our own use. Some of our tank crews will infiltrate into the camp and find some Matildas that will run and take them.

You must support their effort to get these tanks!

I probably shouldn't tell this but you can pull that scenario out of Mega Campaign (Scen408) and rename it ScenXXX.dat (whatever number you choose). You can play it separately but remember, the core force will not have any accumulated experience points.

It won't have a text or CMT file so the slot will appear blank but it will be there once you rename it and load it into the scen folder.

In fact, I'll attach it and you can rename it and replay it apart if you wish...WB

PS Oops. I numbered it wrong. The zip says 409 but it is 408. Sorry.

Let me know how you do, Jim.

I'll tell you how I made it work. The Matildas are actually reinforcements. They appear on a certain turn and are under German control.

This simulates the tank crews sneaking in and grabbing the Matildas. Now since they appear under German control, the Brits are going to start shooting at them. Be ready for that. You can control their exit but the English are going to be hopping mad and ready to stop you.

So get into the camp if you can to offer some help to your tank stealing fellows...The tanks are worth some points so you need them to win.

I wasnt clear in my first post

The first time through desert fox I went after the train
This time thourgh I played the mission as normal...with not extra armor and during the day

Im rusty from not playing but I got whiped trying to take on those defenses...

Im still on the second battle on turn 8 I think

The british broke my line along that southern road...but Im flanking them with two dozen Pz-III's and hitting them head on with 4 Pz IV's and 4 more Pz' III's
Im not finding the matildas to be too hard...they are hard to kill yes...but have the same gun and other tanks..if the British had put 6 lb guns on them I would be in big trouble
And my Me-110's took out 3 of the matildas in one strike...so that helped

Well hail to the Luftwaffe. They probably saved your butt, my friend.

Matildas are hard...very hard to kill. What you will need to do is so pound them that they will abandon the tank. You can beat them that way...WB

Ah, my good friend Huffy!

If its been played, you've done it. Congrats. This is not an easy battle. I played it myself a few times in testing and had a hard time dodging those Brits.

It is a great feeling to abscond these enemy tanks and get away, for sure!
