WITP PC Monitor PSA for the community

Post by Moltrey »

Hello everyone:

As a public service to you all, I recently upgraded my PC monitor from a 32" LG 32UK50T 4K to my new Gigabyte 32" M32Q, a 1440p monitor. I had not really thought about text appearance other than I knew the LG tended to make WITP:AE text look fuzzy and far from sharp, which is bad news on a 2560p monitor and really bad for a text-intensive game like WITP.

So, I happened to go to my standby hardware review channel on YouTube, Hardware Unboxed (with Steve and Tim) to check on what Tim thought about the M32Q. I really liked the 165Hz refresh rate, a big improvement over my older 60Hz monitors.

But here is the TLDR. Tim mentions that a plus of the M32Q is that it utilizes true RGB pixel layout in the display panel versus a cheaper alternative called a "BGR Sub-pixel" layout. The BGR version on some monitors causes blurry text and artifacts.
Granted, you would have to do your homework and research that a monitor you are considering has a standard RGB pixel layout, but I could see a marked improvement in my tired old eyes being able to read WITP:AE text and graphics in general.

So... just thought some of my fellow mates with older eyes out there could use a tip if you are finding it hard to read text on your current monitor.
Cheers!

I am using a Dell U3014 Ultrasharp 2560 x 1600. All of my text is razer sharp. No fuzziness at all. They are expensive.

the new version is a U3017

Yeah, my guess based on experience is these BGR subpixel panels (they are made by 3rd party panel manufacturers, not the LG, ASUS, etc. monitor makers) are in the sub $400 monitor range.
Or alternatively, an older monitor with a bad (large) pixel-to-pixel size measurement.

Those Dells are good ones. Unfortunately the company seems to be sliding lately with bad PR, etc.

I'm just daydreaming here, I've got other things to spend on first, but is this a good deal?

Yes! By all means get the $9.99 drawstring bag. Use it to bring home your snacks for consumption while playing WITP-AE!

I think the Gorn is hinting that he needs a green banana to keep the luster of his skin from fading ...

I play on an inexpensive 75Hz 1440p monitor. the LG c32q-20. By every measure this is a budget QHD monitor, and WitP looks fabulous on it. No fuzziness.

GL:
That is the monitor I just bought and am using currently. I like it a lot. Not too pricey, excellent refresh rate, which can help an otherwise lackluster 60Hz setup without changing the videocard.
One of the better deals in that price range.
Check out the review at Hardware Unboxed on YouTube if you are interested. Tim is quite thorough in his reviews.
