Baghdad shows as Port Supply - shouldn't it be Main Supply?

Post by jdmuir »

I have taken over Syria and Iraq. Looking at the supply map, Baghdad is showing as being in Port Supply, not Main Supply, and all the hexes heading back to the port show as being in Port Supply as well - despite the non-railway hexes reducing in supply value from Baghdad. The 2 hexes to the northeast and southeast of Baghdad show as Main Supply, but the remaining hexes around Baghdad show Port Supply. In the diagram below the red line shows railroad hexes from Tripoli that are in Port Supply, including Baghdad itself. However, Baghdad, being a minor capital should be in Main Supply. The blue lines show hexes in Main Supply, both from Baghdad and from the oil field in Persia. So, my questions are:

1) Shouldn't Baghdad be showing as Main Supply, and
2) Shouldn't the hexes back towards the port from Baghdad also be in Main Supply (until it meets hexes in Port Supply of the same value)?

My understanding is...not when captured. Only by the original owner.

Al, does is supply ONLY the original owner units?

I had a time when Iraq joined the Axis but all my units in Iraq were in basic port supply...

Thanks for the clarification, but where is the Main Supply coming from? Why are the hexes to the northeast and southeast of Baghdad at level 9 Main Supply if Baghdad is only in Port Supply?

Any answer to this? IMO supply is the single most important factor in this game, so it really is essential to understand how it works. I can't reconcile the supply levels showing on the map with the supply explanation in the manual.

If I understand the question correctly, you can see the map level supply as a kind of "level of transport efficiency", if connected to any source, even if only to a port in basic supply, the map supply level will always be max in ports and any connected rail line. So always9, then goes down to 8 or less depending on weather and distance. So because of the link to Syria, the map supply level will be 9 even if some units in the region (the ones over the "supply offer") might get only basic supply (and for them the map level will be irrelevant anyway IIRC). So the hexes North of Baghdad can be 9s for the same reason those near Beirut can also be.

In WP2 I will probably have minors have a supply stockpile that is used when they attack or are attacked.

For example one of the reasons Greece got crushed is that they ran out of ammo.

Thanks Nirosi, and I understand what you are saying. However, I should have been clearer. My question was not why the supply level was 9 northeast of Baghdad, but why it was 9 Main Supply. I could understand if it was 9 Port Supply, but why is it Main Supply if Baghdad is not a Main Supply source?

Hello,

Ok I undersand now. However, not sure I can help with this one. Unless it migh come by land from the Soviets through Persia? Only thing I can imagine now. If not, I am puzzled too.

I think I have a partial answer, although it opens a different can of worms. I now believe that all the hexes in main supply are getting their supply from Tehran, which joined the Axis voluntarily. That makes sense. But what is confusing is how the hexes in Main Supply close to Baghdad (eg the ones on the railroad and road heading south-ish), have higher supply levels than they could get from Tehran. If the supply is drawing from Tehran how can the supply level increase after it has decreased as it gets further from Tehran and closer to Baghdad? I would have thought the hexes in the vicinity of Baghdad should be in Port Supply if their port supply value from Baghdad exceeds the main supply value from Tehran. This seems to be how it works in other parts of the map. So, I'd still like to know how the 2 hexes to the northeast and southeast of Baghdad can possibly have a main supply level of 9 if the main supply is coming from Tehran, which starts dropping from level 9 supply after the end of the railroad on the coast of the Persian Gulf.
