A GS question --- level?

Post by MarkShot »

This relates to my other question ...

You can GS at any HQ level from group to corps. I have the impression that AI assigned to GS is pacing itself based on the scope of the level to which it is committed to.

Therefore, in my above choke point situation would I do better with GS assigned to a corps HQ as opposed to Army HQ which is what I have been doing? Will I get more ordnance for my money by narrowing the scope?

Thanks.

start with this one, no it doesn't increase intensity - that comes off your air settings. What it does is to bound the range of possible missions, so if your GS is to XXXX Pzr Corps alone then the only times the GS kicks in is when units attached to that command are in action.

The value of this is, as ever, situational. Its not uncommon in WiTW, esp in the Italy phase to only make one attack per turn, its more common in WiTE2 to have many attacks. So you can use setting a lower command to avoid flicking the GS button on and off.

Fwiw, I almost never go below army (Axis/W Allies), Front (Soviets) in my GS and quite often use Army Grp as my focus (and then use the on/off, set to reserve etc tricks to control things)

This is again a dual question as I was facing it with the road to Leningrad and the road to Messina. (dual meaning applies to WITW and WITE2)

The defender has decent units (maybe some fort level), decent command, decent terrain, defender's natural advantage, and reserves 6 hexes deep.

Yes, I can fly AD's very narrowly either interdict or unit, and GS, have SUs available, and my own reserve units, and DB attack. Still it can be hard and frustrating breaking a choke point. I have tried the tricks I know. Sometimes repeated hammering does help, other times it replicates the stupidity of The Somme.

I don't know that I have enough MP to DB ATK and rotate stacks to try to put up a more sustained pounding. Going around is so circuitous that it is hard to see an advantage given the ticking clock.

Also, I don't see a way to create an isolation situation either.

Expertise?

Thanks.

Most often the solution is to reframe the problem. There are a few single hex choke locations in WiTE so usually the advice is to go somewhere else, restructure the active battlefield.

With the W Allies in Italy, this reframing should be second nature. If the defence of Messina is too strong, then lots of naval interdiction and naval movement to the north will trash the supply lines (esp with bombers hitting the rail net). Then land somewhere north of the choke point, quite simply the Axis have very powerful individual units but not many of them - so go where they are not.

In WiTE2 there is a potential operational tool. You can set up a rolling offensive with the German infantry (this partly assumes allocation to assault fronts). Attack in overwhelming force to break the front. Don't advance those units. Make sure they are not adjacent to enemy controlled hexes. Push a second wave in to hold the ground, if it can attack good, if not don't worry.

Next turn your initial assualt force should have around 70+ CPP, 100-50 for the attack + (20 to 25 CPP regain), thats good for round 2. Now you are at least 2 hexes into the defensive belt and your mobile stuff isn't committed.

Remember that you can't fortify over 1 (+10%) unless either adjacent to an enemy hex or stacked with a FZ. So by now, a number of the defending formations are in a mess and you are dealing with low level fortifications.

Of course the question is can you afford this commitment? Is it worth it? Given the relative numbers in RtL apart from the final defense of the city you can always go around somehow. In the campaign the Soviets can lock down that sector, fine, take the hint, you can redeploy more quickly.
