Best program to open/edit DAT files?

Post by SittingDuck »

So I'd like to make some changes to the exported .dat files from the editor.

Is there a suggested DAT editor for use with these files?

Hi SittingDuck,

There is no DAT file editor for these files that I know of other than the actual Editor that comes with the game as you can generally edit the data there and then export as originally intended.

Can I ask what you had in mind as that might help me to understand better and if I can suggest any options based on a better understanding of what you might be after here.

Thanks Hubert.

I want to make some changes to unit combat data and want to be able to apply it to all nations, or at least the majors and the big minors. Unfortunately, that would take forever by using just the editor. I need to really get it into a spreadsheet that would apply it universally to all nations. Or, better yet, to just chosen ones.

Otherwise it is just gruesome. I had hoped that I might be able to export the info into a program, change it wholesale, and then import - rather than go to each nation's tab.

Yes that makes sense and unfortunately there is no way to read/export the data into a spreadsheet at the moment.

However there are some facilities in the Editor that might help.

For example, if in the Combat Data section, you wanted to apply the current data for the current country to other countries, you could click on the 'Apply Data' button, then select the countries you wish to the apply the data to, as well as which specific units (e.g. the unit data for those units) you want to copy over, and then click on 'Ok'

It should for the most part, I imagine, get you pretty close to what you are looking for.

That gets me way closer, and will certainly be sufficient.

Thank you, sir!

Wow, that was sweet.

Might want to mention a blurb on that in the manual section on the editor. I once hit 'restore defaults' and it created an effect a bit diff than I had expected, so I got very anxious about those kind of global buttons.

But that was great.
