June (Middle of the Month) Update!

Post by Marshall Ellis »

Hey all:

Just thought I would drop a note to let you know where we are today!

I'm chasing several "issues" that seem to be minor (At least to the programmer) but essentially we're about there. I will have to tweak the PBEM and AI code a bit more since I've not have a chance to do a lot of intitial testing of these two functions.

Just an example of what I'm doing:

Adding stack movement for naval units (A must)! This will not be active for land units since each unit is moved individually. This makes more since when trying to forage anyway!

Testing Guard Committment. Got to make sure that France can commit those Guards!

Testing the interception of naval units. Basically, there are three missions that a naval unit can do, Intercept all, Intercept Weaker forces or Intercept invasion forces. It is functional and does seem to work quite well (For the Brits, that is).

Fixing Invasion Supply. Invasion supply is not calculating too well right now and frankly, I'm at a loss but hey! this is nothing that a few more test landings in North Africa won't reveal for me!

The AI is less than SMART right now so I'm on to develop more better ways of tweaking the AI.

PBEM is not totally functional since I've instituted several game changes such as interception missions, etc so I've got some work to do in this area before it becomes stable but as it stands today, you and 6 other friends could play this game today!

Anyway, just a tidbit of where we are. I've been out for a while and away from the forums (It seems that I missed a lot with all of the rules interpretations and all) but rest assured that there a lot of people working a lot of hours to get this thing done.

Stay tuned...
Thank you

Thanks Marshall. ANY information about how it is going is most welcome. :)

Please allow me to be the first to ask for some screenshots of how things are going to look. It would be so cool to have some visual images to drool over. Pretty please? ;)

Stay tuned? You bet!

Quick Question About Artillery

Post by Marshall Ellis »

Hey guys:

Just a couple of quick questions about artillery:

When conducting bombardment, for casualty calculation purposes, is then entire attacking force summed up?

Example:

I have 10i and 10a factors in combat so at the first of a combat round, when I bombard am I using 20 factors as a casualy calculation or just the 10 artillery factors?

Can the defender use artillery? The rules say not for "Defender Attacks" BUT they also state that if both sides have artillery then they are considered to be done simultaneously???

These may be obvious to most but clarify these for my simple mind, if you would...

Thanks in advance...
Thank you

Artillery is conducted before regular combat in each round.

If both sides have artillery - both fire.

Artillery damage (using the 5-5 table, but ONLY for casualties) is based on the artillery factors ONLY. Not infantry.

BUT,

Artillery also count for purposes of regular combat (when computing totals for damage roll).

So in your example,

10a fire artillery.

20 factors participate in "regular" combat for that round.

Just artillery strength is used for bombardment (i.e. you roll on the 5-5, the casualty result is the percentage of your artillery in factors you inlfict on the enemy, and you discard the morale result).

Both sides can use artillery in the same battle, once per round, after guard commitment.

The "defender attacks" actually means "garrison attacks" (i.e. when a beseiged force tries to break out of a city). Got to love that inconsistant wording!!

Edit: Reknoy beat me to it! And yes the artillery fights during the combat round as normal factors as well.

5-5 table, no bombard in marsh

The questions are:

Do you modify for Commander +1/-1

Do you modify for Cav Superiority +1

After moral loss hits 2.0 non-militia die first

That's what I thought!

Hey guys:

Thank you for the clarification on artillery! Common sense says that the casualty calculation comes only from the artillery factors but wanted to be sure!

NOW another one...

Britain is at war with France
Britain is also at war with Denmark BUT has not yet conquered Denmark.

France is not at war with Denmark BUT is at war with Britain.

Can France enter Denmark to Attack Britain / Invade Denmark?

I don't think so but AGAIN how bout a quick clarification for my simple mind?

Thanks again
Thank you

It depends.

If the controlling major power of Denmark is Prussia, for example, and France is NOT at war with Prussia -- then France cannot enter Denmark without "forcing access" on Prussian territory.

If the controlling power is a MP that France is also at war with, it can invade and conquer Denmark as a controlled territory of an enemy.

Good to see you and I up early this morning! That makes sense as well. Thanks for the help!

How bout invasion supply? Interesting situation coming up in a game where the invasion fleets went to the blockade box to save a few bucks on the next economic phase. Question is, can the depot on the fleet supply just the port area or all areas adjacent to the sea area. Common sense tells me that this fleet could only supply the port area since the ships are technically in the port area but just want a sanity check...

Thanks again...
Thank you

Marshall:

I think you are correct. I don't have the rules handy, but invasion supply from a blockade box should only apply to the port city.

Another question that comes from this -- and it's one that I confess I might get flamed over...

What happens when a force LOSES combat after landing from a fleet stack in a blockade box which is supplying the invasion?

The rules of retreat (as applied by my group) left me wondering.

What about the Channel Crossing Arrow? What if Britain crosses and loses to France?

What if the British were supplied by a British fleet in the Channel?

We played that, if the supply came from a fleet in the adjacent SZ (but NOT in the blockade box), the defeated force could retreat along the coast, provided that it remained adjacent to the supplying fleet stack.

This applied to invasions AND crossing the Channel. So the British would retreat sideways rather than surrender (provided they had the right sea supply).

But if someone supplied from a blockade box and lost the invasion battle -- surrender.

I'm sure these may be wrong, but they were simple enough to employ.

A blockade box isnt an 'adjacent sea zone' so.....
It can only supply the port.

Black Hat's Additional Questions

Post by Reknoy »

To Black Hat's questions about modifying artillery fire...

Does anyone know of anything official (like from a General) that discusses this? The rules (as I skimmed them) do not appear to speak to this.

I don't think there is much of an argument in support of a +1 to the roll for cavalry superiority.

I would think, however, that the leader mod. would apply - notwithstanding that few (maybe only Nappy) of the leaders represented by counters had any affinity towards artillery. I don't think the game accounts for that beyond the "Cav. Leader" demarcation.

on artillery

Post by Wynter »

Indeed, the rules don't speak of modifiers to artillery fire. Although, maybe, one could use the sentence in rule 12.3.5.4: "...irrespective of the tables being used for the normal combat round..." to argue that there are no modifiers for artillery fire.
On the other hand, the same rule later on explicitly states that artillery fire is unaffected by terrain. One could argue that since the rule says nothing about leader and cavalry modifiers, that these modifiers do apply otherwise the rule would have talked about leader and cav modifiers in the same sentence as terrain modifiers.

Another grey zone in the rules...

I don't have the rules with me, but are you sure you can move the fleet with the depot without it (the depot I mean) beeing destroyed?
Also I would like to check the rule, wheather you can place a depot on fleet in blockade at all.

You are right -- fleet moves = depot gone.

You can, however, build a depot on a fleet counter in a blockade box (at least, as far as I know).

It may be another gray area, however. :(

You cannot build a depot on a fleet in a blockade box.

7.4.4 makes reference only to building a depot on a fleet in a sea area.

Isn't a blockade box in a sea area? ;)

Yes, it is in a sea area, but it's more of a type of duty ships are doing. Those in a blockade box have their mission to stop ships coming in or out of port. Fleet with a depot on it represents ships travelling back and forth from the supply source to keep corps supplied.
