IMPORTANT: Allied vs. Japanese "ASW" and "Naval Search" attacks...

Post by Apollo11 »

Hi all,

I am playing PBEMs as both Allied and Japanese player.

The more I play one thought/discovery keeps "buzzing" in my mind...

It seems that "ASW" and "Naval Search" attacks are primarily influenced with
number of bombs certain aircraft carries.

Thus the Allied planes that can carry really big number of bombs (we are
talking about 500 lb = 250 kg bombs here) are in advantage and therefore they
constantly score more hits (the ratio here is around 20:1 from my experience).

This is easily verifiable with anyone who plays UV PBEM.

The Japanese aircraft can sight numerous enemy ships and submarines in each
turn and yet very small number of those sightings result in "sight" ->
"identify" -> "attack" routine for "ASW" and "Naval Search".

The Allied aircraft don't appear to have this problem at all and they happily
do this constantly regardless of fact that they surely must have lower
statistics (experience, morale, fatigue).

But should it be this way?

IMHO, _NOT_ !!!

Why?

Because the number of bombs should not be what counts here - the experience of
crew that flies the plane (i.e. pilot skill) should be the most important
factor here!

German submarines were not carpet bombed with 16 500 lb bombs B-24 can carry -
they very precisely attacked with just few bombs / air carried depth charges
using superb skill of the crew.

Therefore the UV should mimic this and not relay on sheer number of bombs
carried.

UV Example:

The 70 EXP B-24 (16 x 500 lb bombs on normal range / 8 x 500 lb bombs on
extended range) should have much much less chance of scoring hit on sighted
Japanese submarine compared to Betty with 95 EXP (4 x 500 lb bombs on normal
range / 2 x 500 lb bombs on extended range).

Dan, can you please ask Matrix/2By3 regarding this (i.e. so that they can
check the code)?
