Massive Flak Losses vs. No Flak Losses

Post by Naftung »

I attacked two hexes next to each other with a ground support and in one battle there were zero flak losses though there were 28 light AA and 4 heavy AA guns present on the side of defender.
In the other battle the defender had 55 light AA and 5 heavy AA guns and I lost 48 out of 240 bomber planes.

Not sure what causes the first battle to have no flak losses but there shouldn't be such a huge differences thats for sure.
Both results are repeatable.

Thanks for looking into it.

You get FlaK losses also if planes are flying over hexes with FlaK not only at the target hex.

I used your save and ran the attacks many times. I saw a few cases where no flak fired. I saw many cases where 20-30 were listed as firing. I saw some where more (up to around 100) were listed as firing. I found no consistent pattern. I will have to ask Gary/Pavel about this, but I think this is how the system works. I will say after accidentally running the battles without ground support, that for those that think the LW can't do anything, these battles disprove that. Without ground support, the battles were being lost. With ground support, they won, even with some tank divisions thrown in from reserve. A huge difference in the losses to both sides and who won the hex.
All understanding comes after the fact.

Yeah the ground support is like flying artillery that focuses the support guns of the enemy. That can really turn the tide of the battle and reduce your losses considerably.

I tend to use the ground support against targets with low flak numbers to reduce the losses of the planes. In this case the flak numbers 4-1 are not so small and zero losses are surprising. It's like the engine sometimes counts the fly-by flak but never the flak present in this hex.
