Ground attack issue

Post by Strategicon »

No matter what when I plan ground attack with the following priorities : unit on high and interdict on ignore, during the resolution of those attacks the majority of the missions are resolved in interdiction and not in bombed ground units. If interdiction is set on ignore why les missions ne se concentrent-elles pas sur les ground units ? I understand that a bombed ground unit may have the hex it occupies subject to interdiction, but the ground attack target should be primarily the ground unit, and only the ground unit. Not to mention the dispersion of missions on empty hexes producing interdiction while it is set to be on ignore ...

There was a new rule added in 1.02.06 as follows:

• New rule - A mission generated by a ground attack air directive that is performing an attack on a unit has a chance of having the mission converted to an interdiction attack. The chance of switching to interdiction increases with the number of movement points expended by the unit in the unit’s prior turn, and increases against units smaller than divisions.

Are you launching attacks in the first turns of 1941 when the German units have moved a lot? If so, then most are going to switch to interdiction. If however you are seeing them switch off to empty hexes when there are detected enemy units to bomb, that's a different issue. I seem to recall something like this being reported in the past but don't remember the outcome. If you've got a save before the air execution phase and can tell me what AD to watch, we'll take a look.

I did a new test:
The box drawn contained 18 ground units ; 20 strikes were ordered with the necessary planes. All all target priorities were on "ignore" except "unit" on high so that strikes only resolve in ground unit bombardment, interdiction effects should only be collateral. the launch has been on turn 1 (day 2) before the ground phase. Soviet units therefore did not move either.
* first thing: the missions are not sent on the 18 ground units but only on the hexagons which are containing ground units ; in this test 15 hexagons
* second thing : the excess strikes are sent in strike of interdiction on empty hexagons ; in this case 20 strikes ordered for 15 hexes containing ground units, therefore 5 empty hexes were processed by the number of strikes remaining (to do interdiction since they were empty)
* of the 15 strikes targeting the 15 hexagons containing ground units 12 were interdiction strikes (without any bombardment of the units contained in the hexagon), and only three ground units were the target of a bombardment. That is to say 20% bombardment of ground units and 80% air interdiction, without counting the 5 additional strikes "above" the 15 targets containing ground units which were conducted by default as an air interdiction

When a target category has been set to "ignore" raids should focus on priority targets above ignore, or do I miss something ? Collateral interdiction is right, the calculation of the targets being done by the number of hexagons containing units and not by the number of units is also ok, but having to count the number of hexagons containing ground units to set the number of strikes required as well as the problem of the very high percentage (80%) of air interdiction (although set to "ignore") compared to that of the bombardment of land units (20%) (which was the only target priority set in the air directive) seems to me inappropriate.

I don't know if you still want my save game from this test, but if you do, I don't know how to send it to you.

Yes, I'd like the save before you execute the missions. You can email it to 2by3@2by3games.com or zip it up and attach it to a post in this thread. Thanks.

Thanks for the save. Your unit targeting AD hit 15 hexes with units and then hit 5 empty hexes along the north edge of the box which all said Interdiction as the target instead of unit in the air execution summary phase. Did you see something like that? I'll add this to the bug list for Pavel to look into and see if it is intended for unit attack to have a chance of missing units and bombing empty hexes. As for the 15 unit attacks, they didn't kill anything. I can have Gary check to see if his code that is retargeting to interdiction is kicking in, or if they are bombing the unit but just not killing anything.
