Japanese strategic aims

Post by Drex »

Did Japan ever realistically plan to invade Australia or did it always intend to defend the PM-GG-Lunga perimeter. I have read that there were sightings of Japanese troops on Australia itself but they didn't hang around long except for recon.

I remember reading that the Imperial Japan Army wanted to attack Australia but the navy argued against it , the attacks on PM and NG were carried out instead to increase the preasure against the American supply lines.

The IJA might have got troops ashore but could they have kept then supplied and supported? How many major units could they have committed? Its not very likely they would have acheived all that much before major Aussie units counter attacked.
