A question about unit loss tolerance

Post by hongdino »

Hello! I bought TOAW 4 a few weeks ago, and now I'm completely into the charm of the game as I learn to play it. Still, there are several things I can't understand fully.

One of them is the unit loss tolerance. I set the unit to attack with 'ignore losses' expecting it would not care about the excessive loss of its strength and rounds. Now I get there is a limit in this too. I know the 'morale check' happens every combat rounds and it determines whether the attacking unit to break off or not. But sometimes it leads to the results which I can't understand. These cases usually happen when I attack with several units. Usually it goes something like this:

I attacked two units of South Korea with the total of 18 units of mine. Stats say that my forces are far superior than the enemy. As you can see, I made them all attack with 'ignore losses'.

And this is the battle result. Many of the units broke off the attack after the first round of battle. Some of the units, such as the recon unit on the northwest point of the current location, suffered heavy casualty, so I get it. But what about the others? Why did they just gave up the fight though I ordered them to 'ignore losses' and their casualties are not that great?

See the tank brigade I selected at the northwest side of the combat location? That unit also broke off the attack but when I checked its status after the battle, its proficiency, readiness and supply were not just good, but almost intact(the unit description at the upper right corner is not the unit I am mentioning)!

I wonder why this happens. Is there a factor that I don't know to decide which unit to give up its attack?

Remember that these are orders you are giving to men (not robots). They will obey them up to a point. That point depends on many factors such as their quality, condition, and how horrible the losses have been. (And, of course, chance.)
