Fleet retrofit and templates for varying designs of a single ship class

As a simple example, I have many fleets with 4 variants of a frigate class - beam frigate, torpedo frigate, missile frigate, and railgun frigate. Using retrofit from the fleet tab causes them all to be upgraded to the most recent beam figate design instead of preserving their individual variants. I'm forced to individually select each single ship in everyfleet and manually make my retrofit choice. This becomes extremely tedious as my empire grows and there are hundreds of ships to retrofit.

There's a similar "only-one-variant-per-class" prejudice with fleet templates. The ship classes are hardcoded on the form and all you can do is pick a single variant for that class. It would be great to have more flexibility and template a fleet with 4 different class variants as in my frigate fleet used previously.

For me, the template issue is minor compared with the massive retrofit problem. If anyone knows a work around, other than only using a single design per ship class, please let me know. I start to dread research that results in mass fleet changes...
