What is your favourite starting settings?

Atm I play on the 300 star 4x4 map with 6 AI empires that got a headstart with tech 2 and young while I start tech 0.
Many very strong pirates and very many creatures. Story events are activated. All empires including mine have an excellent starting system. This way I am ensured to have AI opponents that have a functional empire when I start to expand.

Sounds good. My first game was also 300 stars, but I left most everything else on default. I'd like to try a larger galaxy, but I worry it might affect performance. I've had smooth crash-free gameplay with my rather ancient GTX 980, and I'm not sure I want to tempt fate.

I like your idea of giving the AI a leg up, though I'm not so sure I want to help pirates. Are you able to deal with them effectively?

Also, do you alter any of the system-spacing settings to space systems out more or less?
