If I play without research or diplomacy for 1939 Storm Over Europe, what happens?

Fury Games has now signed with Matrix Games, and we are working together on the next Strategic Command. Will use the Slitherine PBEM++ server for asynchronous multi-player.

I don't really want to spend time researching or doing diplomacy for my first play. But if I play with the research unticked, am I screwing myself? Like will there be units that I just won't get or the ability to do operation sea lion? Please let me know the pros and cons of no research.

I guess the reason you didn`t get an answer is: nobody ever tried to. It`s a grand strategy game with all pros and cons...

You would still have access to all unit types, although not necessarily as many of each type and amphibious operations would become much harder to accomplish.

That's true, both sides are penalized. The Allies more so as D-Day and landings in the Mediterranean will be much harder, and it will also be difficult to carry out strategic bombing.

I'd recommend amending stats in the editor and making a mod might be a better way than of removing research.

Or you could make a mod where research is more limited to just the areas that really require it.

Personally I play with research though because it does provide a greater experience of technological and doctrinal improvements as the war progresses, and enables both sides to potentially do what they did historically.

I would like to see an option or a mod that assigns research upgrades at historical rates, so you can play a game with true historical parameters, not the "rock, paper, scissors" effect of random investment skewing the game. The game option to play without research is useless, as it leaves you a game where the Axis have an advantage for the rest of the game.
