Ship builder - missiles missing from latest components list

Post by diddimus »

In the ship builder, when I select the option to view 'latest per category' it doesn't show missiles. They seem to be in their own category that doesn't appear.

Is this a bug?

UPDATE: also seems to be weird with other components. I have old and new PD systems showing together.

They are probably being replaced by the latest energy (?) weapons that also count as standoff. The categories in the designer need to be made more specific to avoid this situation, as well as during upgrading a manual design.

It seems that weapons are grouped as fire groups (Direct Fire, Seeking, etc) instead of types (Missiles, Torpedoes, Beams, etc). When you research a new tech (higher tier) in the same fire group, the game thinks it's an upgrade for all types of weapons falling under that group.

What has likely happened is you researched a higher tier of Torpedoes (or Area Weapons), which made the game think your Missiles are obsolete (they all fall under the Seeking fire group).

I don't think it's strictly fire type, although I'm not sure exactly what it is - e.g. researching Super Arrays deprecated my Plasma Thunderbolt torpedoes in favour of Death Rays. Hail Cannons and Ion weapons are still shown as latest though. :?

EDIT: Actually, it could have been in favour of Quantum Burst (Super Ion, seeking/area), which I did research at about the same time. "Upgrade" tries to replace torpedoes with Death Rays, though.

Just to be clear, by "upgrade" I mean what the game is showing you as "Latest Component" in the components list.

When you actually click the "Upgrade" button to upgrade your design, the game will attempt (as far as I understand through my experience) to place the weapons that will give your slots the maximum damage rating, while also trying to fill up all the weapon slots and keeping the design to size limits.

No, the upgrade button will try to replace components with higher tech level components. But it will replace low tier missiles with high tier energy weapons if they are both standoff type - which I think is incorrect. But I don't think it will fill previously empty slots. Nor will it remove excess crew or reactor components if tier upgrades result in an excess - it does a straight component to component upgrade.

It seems to try and keep to the same weapon type (research tree) at least, in my (limited) experience - e.g. it leaves hail cannons, ion weapons, and PD, all of which are max tech I have in those trees, but far from the most damaging which would fit. They are however all still shown in "latest".

tbh, I can't remember how (or even if! :) ) Upgrade & Latest worked in DWU.

Side note: Death Ray upgrades take most of my designs way over-size (they're size 60). It's not just using them everywhere either (a Rapid Ion Cannon in a 120 spot gets left alone)

That does seem to be what it's doing for me. I agree it's not great though - e.g. I tend to put seeking weapons in slots with more limited arcs of fire, I might not want a beam there...

You are correct. I fiddled with it a bit and saw that my assumption was wrong!
