1941 Hitler's Dream - New Scenario

Post by IslandInland »

Alternate Historical Background

In this alternate history Poland is the only country Germany has invaded. As with our timeline this campaign lasted just over a month before the Poles capitulated

The UK and France signed no treaties guaranteeing the sovereignty of Poland. Poland fought and lost alone. The Germans then built up their forces for the only war Hitler really wanted: the invasion and destruction of the Soviet Union.

A pro-German coup in Yugoslavia saved Hitler the trouble of invading. Mussolini warned and threatened in equal measure by Hitler embarked on no foreign adventures in Africa or south-eastern Europe. Greece remained independent and neutral as did Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands in the west.

The now isolationist British are content to occupy themselves with their empire and want no part of another bloody continental war. An "Empire First" grass roots political movement came to power a few years after the Great War and the UK no longer looks towards Europe confident the largest navy in the world can protect them from any aggression directed at them from European shores. Winston Churchill, a former politician turned artist, told anyone who would listen that Hitler was a menace and that Britain should rearm was commonly derided as a warmonger.

Hitler, an ardent admirer of the British Empire, is content to let the British rule their quarter of the world while he only has eyes for the Germanic destiny of lebensraum in the East.

After a brief civil war in the first half of the 1930s a fascist government took power in France. This regime is sympathetic to Nazi Germany and wishes them success in their quest to rid Europe of Bolshevism. Whilst the French government has chosen not to participate in the anti-communist crusade so soon after their own civil war some Frenchmen anticipating the coming war of ideologies have crossed the border and joined the German Army. Other like minded individuals from across Europe have also joined the German armed forces.*

In the US President Lindbergh recently returned from a state visit to Nazi Germany. He found Herr Hitler a "most amicable fellow" and hoped the return visit would see Hitler in Washington DC soon where he would be granted the honour of staying in the White House for the duration of his visit. After Stalin and the Soviet Union had been dealt with Hitler promised his next journey would be to the United States.

In military circles in Tokyo high-ranking staff officers are openly discussing the new war plans which would see Japan secure its oil resources by invading and capturing the Dutch East Indies. Wisely Admiral Yamamoto stubbornly refused to include in the plan any sort of attack on the US or the British Empire. The Netherlands was half a world away and without any allies could do very little to stop the Japanese taking the oil-rich East Indies. Better to leave the Americans alone and not provoke that particular sleeping giant. After all, President Lindbergh has been very generous in his dealings with Japan since coming to power.

*NOTE: There are just the historic foreign SS units. No new units have been created in this scenario.

Theatre Boxes and Reinforcements

The only active Theatre Boxes (TB) are Axis Reserves (AR), Finland (FIN) and Soviet Garrison (SG).

Western Europe (WE), North Africa (NA), Italy (IT), Balkans (BA), Norway (NO) Theatre Boxes are inactive.

If a unit (ground or air) was due to arrive in any of the now inactive TBs then the unit will arrive in AR.

Any units that were in the now inactive TBs have been moved to AR.

Delays and reinforcement schedules have not been changed. The units will still arrive on the date they did historically but now they will arrive on the Map or in the AR, SG or FIN TBs.

What has changed is the internal withdrawals and transfers between TBs.

I have cancelled some of the transfers to SG because it was easier to cancel all of the transfers for a unit and then not have to reinstate any transfers to SG. SG still has to be populated as normal. I have not made any changes to the requirements for FIN or SG TBs. The difference now is you can decide which units you send to SG. You can send all the Rumanians or Italians if you like.

All Finnish units remain in the FIN TB. I have unlocked the German units in the FIN TB so they can be moved but you will need to replace them with other German units of your choice. Only Finnish and German units can be sent to the FIN TB. You cannot send the Italians, Rumanian or Hungarians there. As far as I am aware these restrictions are hardcoded and there is nothing I can do about them.

In the Reinforcement screen all you should see under the "To" column is MAP, Axis Reserves, Finland and Soviet Union Garrison as they are the only 4 destinations a unit can ever have.

German Amphibious Task Forces

The Baltic and Black Sea TFs are in this scenario. I used the 1941 No Early End Campaign as my template and in this they are delayed out of the scenario. I reinstated them. The Baltic TF can be found in the port of Hel in the Bay of Danzig and the Black Sea TF will arrive at Constanta in Rumania on the Black Sea coast on 20th July 1941 (Turn 4).

My reasoning for doing this is historically Germany had a sea-lift capacity in the Baltic during WW II and with the UK and France being neutral there would be nothing to stop the Germans sending some ships through the Mediterranean to the Black Sea and also Rumania would have had some shipping which could have been placed at the disposal of the Axis high command.

Game Events and Lend-Lease

I have made inactive all Events which involve or include the Western Allies (UK, US) and all Events pertaining to any of the inactive Theatre Boxes.
Lend-Lease was a problem which I think (and hope) I have solved. I tried changing the size to zero for all Lend-Lease factories but they would always change back to default and the same happened when I deleted the Lend-Lease locations or factories.
In the end I arrived at a simple and elegant solution. Or at least it will be if it proves to work. What I did was for each of the 3 Lend-Lease Locations (Pacific, North, South) set the Historical City Owner Change on 22 June 1941 to the Western Allies. So in theory the Soviets should see none of the Lend-Lease stuff. I have played head to head up to Turn 10 and so far the Soviets have received nothing from the Western Allies.

Country and Region Specific HQ Units

I thought long and hard about these units and what to do with them. In the end I decided to do nothing. They can be brought to the map and you can use WMBef. Denmark as an army HQ in the Caucasus. I thought about delaying them out of the scenario and adding their manpower to the manpower pool, I thought about removing them and not adding their numbers to any of the pools as this could simulate the border forces Hitler would have needed in the west and south east. I considered renaming them but I came to the conclusion it is probably best to leave them as they are. The Axis player will probably just disband them whilst they are in the Axis Reserves as they will never have a shortage of higher HQ units. If you wish to consider them locked into the AR even though they are not as that goes against the philosophy of the scenario.

In conclusion Hitler effectively has at his disposal not only the armed forces of Germany but also the armies and air forces of Italy, Finland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

If you play this and see anything that doesn't fit with the criteria laid out above then please let me know in this thread. I have noticed the Italian units in the AR have “Frozen for 249 turns” on their detail screen but if you bring them to the map they are not frozen and can be used as normal.

Sometimes support units do not show up in the Commanders Report. In my playtest I brought 3 Italian arty battalions from the AR and were not visible in the CR. I eventually found them attached to German 4th and 9th Army HQs. I do not know why this is. I suspect it is something to do with the game coding itself and not my scenario as such. In the editor I attached any Italian support unit which did not have a higher HQ set to OKH. If you bring an Italian support unit to the map I would recommend you have already brought either Italian 8th Army HQ, Italian Expeditionary Corps HQ or Italian Alpini Corps HQ to the map as most of the other Italian support units are attached to these HQs.

I intend to create a version of this scenario where the Soviets have no TB boxes other than Northern Front and Soviet Reserves (Stalin's Dream).

Then I intend to combine the two scenarios together to create a truly titanic war in the east where the Axis and Soviets have all units available to them. (Dual Dictator Dreams)

A Note To Anyone Who Plays This Scenario

The in-game editor is currently being worked on by the devs and consequently I will hold off on making any changes to this scenario until all the improvements to the editor have been thorougly tested and completed. The last thing I want to do is edit my scenario with the new editor and find it is irreparably damaged.

Thank you for your patience

This version of the scenario doubles the amount of Soviet AP per turn from 25 to 50 in order to give them a chance to weather the Axis onslaught.

This has not been tested and may prove to be too much or too little for the Soviets.

I have uploaded new versions of the scenarios.

They are the same as before but I have added a picture to the zip for the event which fires at the beginning of the scenario.

Drop hitdream.jpg in the events folder which is in Gary Grigsby's War in the East 2>Dat>Art>events.

Place 1941 Campaign - Hitler's Dream.jpg, 1941 Campaign - Hitler's Dream.scn and 1941 Campaign - Hitler's Dream.txt files into the Scen folder of your War In The East 2 install. The Scen folder is inside the Dat folder of your main War In The East 2 folder.

You will see all the other scenarios that come with the game in the Scen folder.

Additional Notes

If you are transferring HQ units from the AR to the map I would recommend setting their support level to 0 before transfer as the game will strip HQs already on the map to provide the newly arrived HQ with support units. This applies even more so if you are transferring a large number of HQs from the AR to the map. You can set the support level to 0 for all units in the AR in the Commanders Report without having to do it one by one.

Some HQs in the AR have units attached to them. You can see this in the editor though in game they will not be visible. For example OB West has several divisons, panzer regiments and sundry support units attached but if you view the unit in the AR in game it will show no units attached. If you were to bring OB West to the map it would not bring the units attached to it with it. They would remain in the AR. If you wanted to disband OB West in the AR it would have no bearing on the units attached. If you wish to be extra careful you could consider bringing a HQ unit to the map and then disbanding it but I don't think there is any need for this level of caution.

I will add to this post as I delve deeper and explore the scenario more.

A couple of points of feedback:

I think you need to create map units for the Luftflotte Units that are imported. Something is not right with them compared to the units that the game starts with on the map. I remember that I ran into this issue when creating Endseig, but I don't remember how I fixed it.

11 units appear to come into the game depleted

There are a lot of flak units that start the game attached to cities. Under this alternative history scenario, would it be expected the cities would still have their flak units attached?

I think it could be argued that for the purposes of this scenario, the static flak units should be converted to non-static

There is also an interesting question as to whether in this alternative history scenario, how the foreign tank equipment should be modified accordingly.

Similar to the point above, there is also an argument for adding back in the losses that Germany experienced historically in 1940 aginst France, Britain, and the low countries. This would include aircraft, pilots, tanks, fuel, etc.

Thanks for the feedback.

I know there are some issues to be worked on but my main focus was getting the scenario into a playable state and then getting it out to the WITE 2 community so that they could do most of the testing. :D

If you could remember how you fixed the issue with Luftflotte units in Endseig that would be a great help.

I have a list of things to address in the scenario and top of that list is flak attached to cities. I might move them to eastern cities in the Reich or add them to the AR or just leave them. I am undecided. I prefer to take a "hands off" approach with decisions of this nature in regard to this scenario which is why I left the German country specific HQs (WMBef.) in the AR and did not disaband them.

The losses incurred in previous camapigns and reorganisations I did consider but erred against doing this as it seemed too retroactive. Also I was wary of going back "too far" in this fictional timeline. If I start second guessing myself then I would never have got even version 1.0 of this scenario out to the public. However I suppose it would be relatively easy just to add the lost men, guns and AFVs to the pools. It is something I will consider doing.

The foreign tanks could be considered a gift from the now fascist French government. To be honest up until now I had not considered the foregn tanks in German service.

With a little bit of testing, I figured it out. I also confirmed that Automated AI assist also picks these units up and makes choices for them.

1. In the Editor go to the Air Groups tab
1A. Click on "Edit Air Operational Groups" if it defaults to the Edit Air Groups page
2. Scroll down to Row 105-107
3. Copy Loftflotte 1, 2, or 4.
4. Paste it into Row 108 and rename it.
5. In the top left under the unit ID, where it says "Air HQ" click on "- (0)"
6. In the next menu, that comes up, click on the unit you want to link it to. For example, if you are creating an entry for Luftflotte 3, click on the entry for 2568 in the menu.
7. Now, when the unit is transferred from the reserves it behaves as expected.

I would be happy to collaborate or assist as you continue developing this and build it out as a true "alternative history" mod.

I started making some edits to the scenario but decided it might be better to share my sources instead.

Here are armor losses for 1939 and 1940: https://panzerworld.com/german-armor-losses

Overall, it looks like about 1,100 tanks including 1941 losses before June 1941:
321 Pzr I
338 Pzr II
54 Pzr 38 (t)
172 Pzr III
117 Pzr IV
105 Command Tanks (Some quick googling showed these were largely Pz Is and Pz IIs)

One thing that is a little surprising is that total reported losses for Pzr Is totaled 532 through March 1942 yet there are only 239 in units when the scenario starts.

More info on Aircraft losses...

Table VII gives an idea of the proportions of twin-engine represented by each bomber type in the total losses in table X

Table X gives pretty good numbers of what the losses were

Thanks for figuring it out.

As for collaborating I appreciate the offer but I would rather do the work myself and at my own pace.

Are you including losses from the Polish campaign in these figures? The premise for the scenario is the Polish campaign went the same way as it did in our timeline with the same concomitant losses. The Denmark, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Norway, Battle of Britain, Yugoslavia and Greece campaigns did not occur and so those losses in men, aircraft and AFVs can be looked at with a view to adding them to the starting pools in the scenario.

I don't have the time to do a lot of work on the scenario right now. It took a very long time to get it to a point where it was releasable. As I said in my earlier post I have a list of things I want to look at and address but not at the moment.

As it is the scenario is very playable and I would say is perhaps 90%-95% done barring the discovery of any game-breaking glitches.

Re: 1941 Hitler's Dream - New Scenario

Now I'm thinking that the German economy somehow has to be reduced as they would not have had the slave labour they historically had from the occupied countries of Europe in June 1941.

This is exactly this sort of thing I actually wanted to avoid as once you start second guessing a fictional scenario it can lose all touch with reality and become something almost farcical.

My scenario was created with the premise of just giving the Axis player access to everything historically the European Axis had in terms of ground and air units as much as the game engine allows. This meant creating a context where the Western Allies do not exist as such and the only country Germany has invaded is Poland. I wanted to keep the Finnish TB as that was a result of a war between them and the USSR. The Soviet Union Garrison would also be required but other than that I just wanted to dump everything else in the AR and create a sort of sandbox for the player where they have complete freedom and can do what they like with all the toys they have to play with.

I wanted the design philosophy of the scenario to stick closely to these principles and not stray too far from this initial inspiration and "mission statement". Most of all I wanted to avoid going down the rabbit hole with this and start making changes predicated on assumptions which are in turn based on another set of assumptions. This can be the bane of ahistorical scenarios and for this and other reasons I wanted to keep the rationale simple.

I will add to the manpower pools and AFV and aircraft pools the stuff the Axis lost in the campaigns which didn't take place in this timeline and there are things I want to look at such as city based flak but that it is further down the line. I really do not want this scenario to become something I have to continously second guess.

For the most part I am very happy with the way it is right now.

I am in the dev beta group and there is a new editor which at the moment seems to be quantifibly worse than the old one.

This modified scenario is still good to download and play.

I want to modify the scenario...

How do you unfreeze the HQ units that start frozen? I try to use the unfreeze option, but it doesn't work.

How do you code the Italian air HQ units so that that accept units and stay on the map?
