A careless cigarette costs lives

Post by Jellicoe »

I have been playing this game for many years and still new things crop up

I have just lost two tankers to 'accident' in as many months. One off Cochin and one of Lahaina. Never had this happen before

Irritating to lose two perfectly good tankers in early 42. Cool to see the game ai doing its thing

Looking forward to the Patch!

It can happen especially during repairs too. More about Catastrophic Events here:

The fact that it can happen at any time, without warning, makes this more than chrome but GOLD...

About 10 turns ago I had a midget sub sitting in the coastal waters of Truk suddenly have battery explosion that crippled her and inflicted like 50 flt / sys damage. Luckily she was right outside port when it happened.

Battery explosion in this game is a new one for me! Were they experimenting with Lithium Ion batteries? :P

I wonder if anyone in the game has ever had a submarine sunk by an overflowing toilet?

Did any side in the Pacific have submarines where such incidents could happen? Or was that an exclusive issue with some German U-boats?

I don't know of any.

So that event should not be possible in this game then. :)

Indeed.

My point is just that I am pretty sure that an incident that could not occur in the type of submarines that were operated in the Pacific, would not have been included into the game. I hold the people who made this excellent game to an extremely high standard. And so far they have surpassed that standard.

Batteries used at that time (lead-acid battery) are emitting Oxygen and Hydrogen in an explosive mixture (most propably know this reaction from school). Especially when charging the batteries or discharging at a high rate (e.g. at full/flank speed) large amounts can be produced and the air in the battery room needs to be ventilated. Since a submarine is a closed environment, a failure of such systems can lead to an expolsive gas inside the submarine which only needs a spark to blow up.

This describes the principle pretty good, but on a submairne it´s obviously a much larger scale.

Not so much the Oxygen but Chlorine gas if there was salt water getting into the batteries as well as the hydrogen gas. If the battery acid leaked, the hull could collapse when diving which did happen to an early USN submarine, the F4.
