Drop Tanks v Extended range

Which is better, to use drop tanks on a fighter, or fly missions at extended range? It seems, subjectively, that extended-range escort missions are particularly ineffective, although extended-range sweeps seem to do just fine.

In general, extended range is to avoided if at all possible.
