I don't know how many here are also on WITE 2 but I started a combined AAR on that forum some 3 years ago, well The Axis triumphed on the Eastern Front in Jan 1945 but the fight in the West continues and as such I will continue the fight on this forum now, its taken me some time to get my act together and post a report but its time this is a PVE game so don't get to excited as it could get boring real quick but I want to see this through to the end.
The Strategic Situation
Russia has surrendered , Axis Forces now begin to disarm and demobilise The Red Army, there is basically a stalemate situation on the Western and Mediterranean Fronts.

Mainland Europe comes under heavy air attack as enemy bombers strike at northwest Germany, France and the Low countries.
In the Baltic a massive air battle takes place starting from Friesland and ending at Mecklenburg and Pomerania as Luftflotte Reich ( Weise ) battles the US 8th Air force across more than 380 miles of territory, despite General Weise's air units putting up heroic efforts the V - Weapon facilities at Greifwalds, Swinemuende, Neustrelitz and Stettin take heavy damage, both our forces and the enemy took heavy losses throughout the battle.

Further south The Ruhr was targeted along with Cologne, Brussels, Antwerp and many other industrial centres, German air defences countered with Josef Kammhuber's I Jagd Korps intercepting many enemy raids.
Paris was attacked several times including the OKW Chief's Headquarters, at Normandy the enemy continued to concentrate attacks on the beach defences as our forces continue to rebuild and strengthen the fortifications along the coastline.
In northwestern France there were only limited attacks on Army Group H positions, the command continues to build up its forces.

We continue to interdict air operations from Corsica as well as seaborne supply operations that maintain US 7th Army's positions on the French coast, both 1st Armee and 19th Armee have contained the enemy along a 30 mile beachhead, with only two small ports to resupply them ( Cannes and Cogolin ) the enemy remains pinned down on the beaches, however the enemy still maintains superiority in the air over the battlefield for now.

We continue to interdict air operations from Corsica as well as seaborne supply operations that maintain US 7th Army's positions on the French coast, both 1st Armee and 19th Armee have contained the enemy along a 30 mile beachhead, with only two small ports to resupply them ( Cannes and Cogolin ) the enemy remains pinned down on the beaches, however the enemy still maintains superiority in the air over the battlefield for now.

Situation Report Dec 30th 1944 Turn 79
Army Group C
With Italy now the West's only major front in the war the air operations have for some time been reduced with most of the enemy air units diverted to supporting the beachhead in southern France, still the enemy has conducting medium scale raids on the central sector of the Axis lines against 5th Pz Armee and 10th Armee units in an effort to soften the defences for a Allied breakthrough.
The Volturno Line sector
Us 5th Army launches a series of attacks, US 18th Airborne Corps ( Ridgway ) with the 101st Airborne leading the assault and supported by Infantry from US 4th Corps and Brit 5th Corps launch a direct attack along the coast road, the attack is blunted by Balck's Panzer troops, Ridgway regroups and attacks only to be halted again with heavy losses.
North of this fighting General Fridolin von Senger und Etterlin's 14th Armee is again the main target of Allied operations as LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps ( Kuebler ) comes under heavy pressure as four Allied Corps assault the line with massed armour, the enemy makes three attempts to dislodge our troops but fails.
The Adriatic Sea Front
The Biferno line sector
On 10th Armee's front Allied forces struck at two sectors of the line firstly a joint Canadian / Polish armoured assault against LI Mountain ArmeeKorps, swinging around Hans Hube's XIV Pz Korps which was defending the line south of Isernia, the joint attack gained little ground as Allied armour ran into the 90th PzGren Div and the attack was halted without getting across the river, a second attempt also failed.
On the right flank of LI Mountain the second Allied effort also ran into trouble as two enemy Corps moved against LXXIV ArmeeKorps, 6th SA Armoured Div clashed with 16th Panzer while enemy Infantry tried to force a crossing of the river only to be driven back twice with heavy losses.
After another week of Allied efforts to push our forces back from our river defences and push through our line fails.

Army Group B / Army Group H
Heavy snowfall over western Europe forced enemy air activity to be the quietest in the last two years, Berlin was hit by a small raid but no damage was inflicted on the German capital and the enemy lost only one aircraft.
Further south the few Allied sorties into occupied territory did however cause high levels of damage mainly targeting our synthetic fuel production facilities but at a cost to Allied aircraft.
Paris had a week free of attack but airbases in northeastern France and in particular Normandy were struck hard with a large number of our aircraft destroyed on the ground.
Generalleutnant Fredrich Wiese 25th Armee Headquarters arrived in Brittany to take over the defence of that sector.

Allied air attacks were once again lighter this week but none the less the enemy continued to soften 5th Pz Armee defences, Hube's XIV Pz Korps covering the central sector coming in for heavy attention as did Balcks Panzer troops station at Grazzanise,Axis Flak units operating with front line forces inflicted heavy losses on the attacking aircraft.
North of the defence line both Armee headquarters ( Von Arnim 5th Pz and Von Vietinghoff 10th ) were also targeted but no loss of life occurred.
Along the Volturno line the enemy launched armoured assaults against the dug in defenders of 14th Armee, over 400 AFV's backed by 90,000 men struck LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps defending the Central Apennines mountain range, the initial attack was held easily with support from 15th Panzer Division, a second push led by US 2nd Corps was halted, both attacks caused substantial loss of life to the enemy.
While enemy was launching this southern armoured thrust to break our lines Montgomery's Brit 8th Army began attacking the Biferno line, the 2nd NZ Division backed by Free French Motorised troops and US infantry attempted a breakthrough some 20 miles south of the Port city of Termoli once again bypassing Hube's Panzer's but ran straight into Panther G's of the Guardes du Corps and the 90th PzGren Div the enemy attack was blunted, regrouping for another assault Montgomery's troops again were stop with more heavy losses and no gains.
With winter approaching southern Italy the stalemate situation remains.

Good news for General Guenther Blumentritt ( Army Group H ) 6th SS Pz Armee now comes under his control which contains almost half the German armour in France.
Paul Bader's Army Group B Armies under strength due a shortage of manpower and armour replacements maintains high alert in the Normandy area, despite this the beach fortifications are now almost rebuilt to there full strength even with the weekly bombing and the bad weather conditions morale is high amongst the troops.

In southern France the snow continues to fall on the Allied beachhead steadily with the US 7th Army holding a 30 mile strip of the coast centred around the port town of Cannes, despite superior numbers around the beachhead Gustav Von Vaerst's 1st and 19th Armies are unable to breakthrough the heavily fortified area, likewise the enemy cannot push out, with only 7 Divisions ashore the enemy remains dug in with a tenuous supply situation with only resupply coming in by sea and air from Corsica the stalemate remains.
Even with the enemy trapped the Allied air command maintains its bombing campaigns against Axis supply lines targeting the rail system and command and control centres.

In the early hours of the 13th the Allies open up with a huge artillery barrage on the defenders at Grazzanise, with the bombardment finished two Allied Corps ( US 2nd and 18th Airborne ) attack on two fronts from the town of Caserta and along the coast road three Divisions supported by over 260 tanks, there is heavy fighting but General Balck's LXXXX ArmeeKorps contains the initial attack, after regrouping there armour the enemy relaunches the assault with Gen Ridgway's Airborne Corps leading the attack but again Balck's Panzer troops blunt the assault forcing the enemy to fall back.
North of the Grazzanise battle six Allied Corps launch a major offensive against 14th Armee, General Kuebler's LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps is assaulted on three fronts by 100,000 thousand men and 700 AFV's, the opening artillery smashing front line fortifications, Axis defenders barely hold the line as the enemy pause briefly then launch a second attack which destroys the Kuebler's last defensive barriers along the front, with only the river and mountain as a last line of defence an enemy breakthrough seems likely as 14th Armee prepares for a third push by US Armour towards the shattered lines however the enemy strength is smaller in numbers and the attack is held up by 15th Panzer Division and 29th PzGren Division.

On the northern front General Vietinghoff's 10th Armee line remains mostly quiet the only major action is south of Termoli where three Allied Corps attempt to push north across the river and assault Feuerstein's LI Mountain Korps hoping to find any weak points in the line and open a gap between 10th Armee and 5th Pz Armee, there is sustained fighting as Infantry backed by Armour push across the river only to be forced back by the 90th PzGren Div who inflict heavy losses to the enemy, US Infantry make a second attempt late in the week to force a crossing but are once again held by Feuerstein's troops.

Cotentin Peninsula
General Georg Keppler ( 6th SS Pz Armee ) is woken by his staff with news that Allied Paratroops were landing between Cherbourg and Carentan in force and that a large Allied Naval force is sighted in Seine bay, enemy Bombers were attacking airbases, ground installations and ground units en masse trying to disrupt German communications. Keppler orders full mobilisation of his Army and also alerts Army Group B , Army Group H and OKW Headquarters a second D-Day has begun, in Paris Rommel and his staff had been expecting a possible second attempt later in the year with better weather conditions but the enemy had taken him by surprise launching the invasion in winter and under the cover of a snow storm !
The enemy suffers heavy losses but elements of two Airborne Div's manage to land south of Cherbourg

Despite the bad weather mobilisation of Axis units was proceeding rapidly with 7th Armee ordering four ArmeeKorps to move with all haste to the Cotentin Peninsula to support 6th SS Pz Armee. Until the bulk of Dollmann's 7th Armee arrives Keppler's troops will have to fight alone with the next hours of battle crucial for the Westheer.

General Georg Keppler ( 6th SS Pz Armee ) is woken by his staff with news that Allied Paratroops were landing between Cherbourg and Carentan in force and that a large Allied Naval force is sighted in Seine bay, enemy Bombers were attacking airbases, ground installations and ground units en masse trying to disrupt German communications. Keppler orders full mobilisation of his Army and also alerts Army Group B , Army Group H and OKW Headquarters a second D-Day has begun, in Paris Rommel and his staff had been expecting a possible second attempt later in the year with better weather conditions but the enemy had taken him by surprise launching the invasion in winter and under the cover of a snow storm !

With snow falling the first troops begin to land, British Infantry start pushing up the beaches to establish a beachhead under heavy fire from the troops of Generalmajor Herman Floerke's LXVII ArmeeKorps stationed in and around the city of Caen, wave upon wave of landing craft move in to drop off enemy troops, despite the concentrated fire placed on the beaches the enemy continues to advance suffering heavy casualties,German naval artillery ( Longues-sur-Mer Battery ) guarding the approaches to Caen and the Orne River estuary open up on the enemy armada in the bay. There is heavy fighting as German 176th and 352nd Infantry Div's fight the lead elements of four British Divisions, on Floerke's left flank part of Sepp Dietrich's I SS Pz Korps and LXXXVII ArmeeKorps are fighting to hold the town of Bayeux, a massive tank battle ensues as the enemy manages to land armoured formations throughout the morning, the German defence is tenacious but enemy numbers are growing in strength even with the appalling casualty numbers inflicted on the enemy Dietrich and Floerke are pushed back with Bayeux captured.
Carentan
Further north up the Cotentin peninsula Dietrich is forced to divide part of his Korps to support General Alfred Wuennenberg's XII SS ArmeeKorps defending Carentan and also keep a tenuous supply line open for General Heinz Lammerding's XIII SS ArmeeKorps defending Cherbourg, another major tank battle in front of Carentan sees the 49th SS Pz Gren Brigade and 353rd Infantry forced to retreat despite a counterattack by the 116th Panzer Div, north of Carentan the 78th Sturm Div puts up heavy resistance but facing two full strength US Div's is finally overwhelmed and pushed back allowing the enemy to link up with enemy Paratroops. With our forces still holding Carentan and the surrounding areas of the town the two main Naval Batteries ( Crisbecq Battery (Saint-Marcouf) and Azeville Battery are able to continue to attack enemy shipping off the coast.
After a day long battle across a 60 mile front the Allies have now established a beachhead, our forces are bloodied but not beaten and the enemy has suffered tremendous casualties to capture this thin strip of beach, there Paratroops are pocketed and in danger of being cut off if Keppler's Army can hold till 7th Armee arrives.

While heavy fighting rages at Normandy Allied efforts against German Industry continues the US 8th Air force launches massive raids against the Industrial region in Hannover, bombing raids with aircraft numbering up to 200 Bombers in each attack strike at Celle, Misburg, Dolbergen and Nienhagen, the enemy targeting the Oil and Fuel making facilities.
In Berlin Hubert Weise ( Luftflotte Reich ) orders every available fighter unit operating in the northern sectors and the Berlin air defence zone to intercept the raids, as the battle over Hannover takes place smaller RAF Bombers raids are able to slip the through and strike at the German capital though the heavy snowfall cause little to no damage to the city.

Over northwestern and northeastern France and at the beachhead area enemy air activity is at a minimum possibly due to bad weather or other priorities giving our forces the advantage over the beachhead battle, further inland however at Cologne the RAF launched one of the biggest raids in sometime committing 500 enemy Bombers against major military industrial centres as well as Army Training Faculties, to counter the raid virtually every fighter unit stationed in France and The low Countries was committed to the battle over Cologne.

With The Allies just maintaining control of there beachhead positions against 6th SS Pz Armee British and US forces begin attacks towards Carentan and Caen to expand the perimeter, elements of four Allied Corps attack Dietrich's Panzer Korps and the vanguard of newly arrived LXXXVII ArmeeKorps ( Erich Marcks ) which had begun fortifying the town, the enemy attempts an armoured assault backed by Infantry and Paratroops but is thrown back with heavy losses.
On the southern sector of the beachhead enemy troops from three British Corps launched an attack against our positions hoping to breakthrough to Caen only to be halted easily due to the timely arrival of General Gustav Von Zangen's LXXXIV ArmeeKorps.

Walther lucht's 7th Fallschirmjeager Div arrives and a third and final assault clears the enemy from the beach leaving the enemy position now in danger of collapse with there beachhead split in two, reports indicate however that the Brit 2nd Army Headquarters landed north of Carentan.

This weeks main assault by the Allies falls on 5th Pz Armee and 14th Armee, with there second attempt to invade western France faltering and in danger of collapsing the enemy is throwing everything at Army Group C, at Grazzanise four Allied Corps assault the town an estimated 70 thousand men backed by over 400 Tanks begin a two pronged attack, despite being outnumbered our forces are well dug in and the terrain favours the defenders after two assaults on the line the enemy is forced back.
The 14th Armee positions heavily fortified along the Mountain range south of Capua airbase has been a stumbling block for the Allies who have constantly launched massive assaults but have yet to push Axis troops from there well defended forts, this week sees another huge combined attack by elements of six Allied Corps, over the week three attempts were made to push back LXXXXVII ArmeeKorps positions in front of the airbase.
Ten miles north the enemy launches a diversionary attack to force a breakthrough towards Isernia and draw off troops from the main battle but this attack is held by 9th Panzer Div and the supporting Infantry.
Biferno Sector
On the Adriatic Front the 10th Armee dug in along the river comes under heavy attack, US 1st Army and Brit 8th Army strike at General Feuerstein's LI Mountain ArmeeKorps defending the southern end of the line, the defenders are struck by four Allied Corps numbering around 75 thousand men and nearly 700 tanks, once again though the enemy launches a direct assault against heavily fortified positions in bad weather on muddy ground and are easily held, the enemy launches a second attack which is halted again.
German defensive tactics prove decisive and the Axis Line holds.
