Weather

Post by bladesinger79 »

Stop me if someone brought this up before.

I have noticed that once a weather pattern has been set, the ENTIRE globe is feeling it no matter where you hover the pointer at. In the Northern Fury series, the battles have all seen very light rain, light middle clouds from 10K to 16K feet, and sea state 2. I could hover over Australia (I'm currently fighting in the UK) and damned if the conditions are the same there.

A bug? A design oopsie? Or a Who-Gives-A-Damn thing?

Where have you been since 2014?

Global, universal weather has been part of CMANO/CMO since the initial release and weather systems were an early request in the original suggestions threads from the very first.

Correct, weather in CMO is (and always has been) global. It's a simplification, but is WAD. Note that the beta did add the ability to create weather zones, so going forward we should start to see some more varied and dynamic weather patterns appear in newly created scenarios. How ubiquitous the use of that feature will be I can't say; while global weather is rather absurd, it also doesn't really make that much of a difference in most cases, so I imagine scenario designers won't necessarily implement it that frequently for the sake of convenience.

The "new" zoned weather capability is something I've played with and been watching. When it was first asked for, I nodded my head in approval. But I am curious how much it will be used. Its been in the beta for a bit now and haven't seen a scenario that uses it. I have wondered if its one of those things people like to bring up with little expectation that they'll ever use it. Maybe once its in the stable release, we'll see more use of it.

From the many scenarios I have played unless you're playing Cold War era with huge continental size front lines weather really doesn't make a difference when its set on one setting. Though one day if there is a feature where you just drag and drop a few points and highlight where and what type you want your weather to be would be nice. (Not sure if thats what the new feature does havent tested it out). Either way I dont mind if its still years away.

Pretty much a Who-Cares reaction. I'm ok with that.

I've played around with the new zonal weather.
I created an area, say 500 mi dia, make it a tropical storm & attaching the ref points to a biologic & plotting it waypoints to get a moving tropical storm. Neat, some kool game protentional having more dynamic weather I hadn't seen mentioned before. Looks like you can have multiple weather zones, but not one inside the other & only one that is moving. Least that's what I've messed around with so far.

You can have one within another if you build the zones right, I think.

Oh, well thats ignorance on my parts. Had no reason to try it out so far but if its not too complicated Ill give it a go.
