Pacific Inferno - Variant game Godefroy(A) vs Deaniks(J) - no Deaniks

Post by godefroycz »

We are starting a new game with Deaniks. I hope this time it will be longer and Japan will do well economically. I would like to at least make it to 1945 this time.
In the end, I gave the nod to Andy Mac's Variant Rules game. I'm afraid that my choice will destroy me from the first turn. However, personal experience is non-transferable.

FOW ON
Advanced weather ON
PDU ON
Historical First turn OFF
Allied damage control ON
Surprise ON
Realistic R&D ON
Reliable USN torps OFF
No unit withdrawals OFF
Reinforcements Fixed
Auto subs OFF
Turn cicle 1 day

Andy Mac‘s updated scenario 2v9

HR turn 1
- no carrier hunting
- allied may move taskforces that are already out, no creation of new allied task force.
- allied may not move or change settings of allied planes, no moving LCU, China is excluded
- 15 hex limit for invasion range
- only carriers can attack ports, max 2 ports

HR in general
- 4E's may not naval bomb below 10k feet patrol are excluded
- max fighter altitude limit 30k
- must pay the PP to cross border with a restricted unit, Thai units can move into Mayala/Burma
- Canada and USA troops may move between each other if restricted, restricted British/Indian troops may move into Burma/Thai/Malaya
- troops can be unloaded only in dots/bases (same for para)
- para units can attack just one target at the time – if the para unit split, it must be rebuilt in one base first before another attack.
- no strategic bombing from/to China until 1944

Andy Mac‘s Variants v16 - 200 points
All categories must be used and the maximum in one category is 30%, i.e. 60 points
We'll see if the opponent keeps it. I understood from some shooting that probably not. He probably plans to support the economy. I do not mind it. Fuel production has yet to win a war, but scarcity may lose it. I understand that.

Specials
- Refinery production 10 fuel + 1 supply
- Heavy Industry production - 3 supplies + 2 HIP
- The Japanese can deploy other ships for the difference in tonnage when changing the Yamato class to another. The new ships will arrive in the Yamato and Musashi dates - May 42 and December 42. New ships - max 10, only 1 CV and no submarines.
- 21in Mk 14 Torpedo reduce dud rate by 10 from 80 to 70
- Allies can take a maximum of 12 ships out of ports in turn 1

Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I admit that the huge table with endless options and 200 points available scares me. I don't know if I should spread them regularly so that I don't neglect something. The opponent can click 15 CVs and there will be a problem. He can reinforce the ground troops and will be a problem. He can wipe me out of the sky and there will be a problem.
I also can't guess what Japan's master plan will be. In the last game, he got stuck in Singapore, Palembang, Clark Field and Hawaii, and even though he transferred at least 7 divisions from China in half a year, he only succeeded in Singapore. He will certainly not make the same mistake twice. I will worry about India and Australia.

Then there's the question of which 12 ships I can save from hell.

In your last game didn't he try and take Hawaii? That is a good reason to fail taking those bases/areas Japan needs.

There are a lot of options in a Variant game. With 200 points you have some flexibility but not a great deal.
It seems that the max you can spend is 60 points in one area. I will be interested in what you choose.

One place I will give a bit of advice. P-47D25, advance the full 6months and delay production 3 month. That is an 10 point expenditure
and gives you 9 extra months of production of one of your best airframes ( 9 x 175 = 1575 extra airframes and 13 x 175 = 2275 total airframes )

Of course I tried to get inspiration from other games. Since this is my first time playing such a variant, we agreed that my opponent would send me his choice before I sent mine.

And then new 57 Shimakazes. They will fly all over the Pacific. I will not modify my selection in any way, moreover, I fit within the limits everywhere.

If I count correctly, it's 6 points over - fixed

Specials
Reduce Dud rate of torpedo 21in Mk14 by 10
12 ships will be pulled from ports in the first turn
This is compensation for free ships for the Japanese after the Yamato - Kongo conversion. And also for increased production of fuel and supplies, which will primarily help the Japanese economy. I don't know if it's a lot or a little, but submarine torpedoes are a big problem for me and of course there will be a sequel ;)

A section – 51 pts
A1 - Accelerate F6F-3 by 3 months to 43/1 – 4.5 pts
A1 - Accelerate P-47D25 by 6 months to 43/9 – 8 pts
A1 - Accelerate Corsair II by 6 months to 6/43 – 9 pts
A1 - Accelerate F4U1-A by 6 months to 6/43 – 9 pts
A2 - Delay production end P-47D25 by 3 months to 9/44 – 2 pts
A13 - Cancel Withdrawal Sqn 2518, 2519, 2520, 4008, 4018, 4173, 4174, 4175, 4176 – 4.5 pts
A15 - Add 50 PBY-5 to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 SBD-3 to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 Martlet II to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 F4F-3 to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 Albacore to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 Wellington 1c to start pool – 2 pts
A15 - Add 50 P-40E to start pool – 2 pts
I mainly accelerate the fighters because I assume the Japanese will do the same. I may have gone overboard with filling the pool, but I wanted to be prepared for losses in the first period. I'm not withdrawal multiple fighter squadrons.

Godefroy: And then new 57 Shimakazes.
What did you mean by this? The start of your post said he got 8 Shimakazes, so where does the 57 come from?

I also wonder whether he meant the Shimakaze (6x12.7cm guns and 15 X TT, 40 kts) or the (Akizuki class) Shimotsuki type (8 X 100 mm DP guns) and a very good AA ship. That would have been my pick. Japanese naval AA is typically weak.

B section – 1 pt
B1 – Increase port potential of Vava'u by 1 to 4 – 1 pt
I had to use the category as a symbolic point

E section – 40 pts
E1 - Add size 30 Martlet II factory to UK – 5 pts
E1 - Add size 30 Corsair II factory to UK – 5 pts
E1 - Add size 30 P47D2 factory to Eastern USA – 5 pts
E1 - Add size 30 F4F-4 factory at Eastern USA – 5 pts
E1 - Add size 30 B-25C factory at Eastern USA – 10 pts
E3 – Add size 50 Refinery in Melbourne – 1 pts
E5 - Increase size Repair Yard – Sydney by 10, Auckland by 20 – 4 pts
E6 - Add 200k supply - Chungking 80k, Changsha 30k, Sian 20k, Wenchow 15k, Kweiyang 25k, Kweilin 20k, Kunming 10k – 2 pts
E8 - Add 750k Oil – 300k Melbourne, 300k to Sydney, 150k Adelaide – 3 pts
I struggled a lot with this one. I considered upgrading the Avenger I or the P-40B/E, but in the end I decided on this variant. I have invested a lot in Australia and Oil/Refineries. There are two reasons. If the Japanese could manage to cut off Australia from importing supplies and fuel, I would be able to make something myself. Oil should last until the end of 43. The second reason is psychological. If the Japanese were deciding whether to occupy India or Australia, I wanted to give them one more reason why it should be Australia.

The resources for the Chinese are obvious. In the last game, Deaniks weakened China, and since he increased his PP points by 50 per day, he will surely continue to do so. I'd like to be able to not just be passive in China and if I lose India and the airlift I'll last longer with the stock. It's only 2 points.
Increasing repair capacity is such a traditional thing.

Wow! That is a lot of Shimakazes! Still a weak ASW vessel IMO, but a nasty opponent for your Fletchers. Thanks for explaining.

Opponent fixed the wrong totals - I've highlighted the adjustments in red and the outstanding thing for me is that he pushed the Japanese infantry upgrade to 42/6. If he's already decided on it and tied in the extra points for adjusting the upgrade line and attack power, I'd probably look for 2 points somewhere else.

L9 - Cancel Withdrawal of 5th Arm Div – 3 pts
L9 - Cancel Withdrawal of 267th Armoured Bde – 1 pt
L9 - Cancel Withdrawal of III US Corps HQ – 1 pt
Here I tried to increase the expected losses due to the stronger Japanese infantry. Since I cannot do such a thing, I have to replace quality with quantity. And the first year will be critical for the Indians, British and Australians.
I'm adding 3 more US divisions and I've invested 6 points of one tank division that I'll keep permanently. The second one will be available by 45 and I will definitely use it.
Another corps could help me with the later landings in the Pacific. I have to say that I am not sure about this land pick, but I had to choose something.

N3 - Add 4 CVL's Independence Class - 4 pts
N11 - Reduce Dud rate of torpedos by 20% to 50 (with spec) - 10 pts
(I don't think it should apply to just one type of torpedo but I agree let's just apply it to the 21in Mk 14)
There was some discussion about whether the reduced dud rate applied to all torpedoes or just one type. In the end I agreed to just leave it for the 21in Mk14 but I wonder what is correct. This choice of -20% logically follows on from the -10 that I got in the spec rules. For 10 points I move from 80 to 50 and that's a very good deal in my opinion.

Other changes don't need much explanation. I want a British fleet in the Indian Ocean so that the Japanese don't have free seas. Also, I'm getting 3 modern US battleships soon. I don't know yet if I will use them as escort vessels for aircraft carriers or if they can be useful in the north if the Japanese want to advance here.

The changes to the destroyers will hopefully give me a better chance for some DEI action early on and will be useful in TFs with aircraft carriers.

O section – 5 pts
O1 - Add 50 PP per day – 4 pts
O2 - Add 500 PP's at start – 1 pt
Anyone with experience, please let me know if it's a complete misplay pick.

The question that remains to be resolved is which 12 ships I will pull out of ports. I'll keep it after the first turn.

I'm leaving for a week-long inspection of defense installations in Karachi, Melbourne and the West Coast (think of it as a trip to the mountains). By the time I get back, Deaniks is editing the game and planning the first move. :geek:

I'm starting to get a little worried about what the opponent is up to. He has been planning the first move for a week.
I made another small change.
L8 - Change 3rd Infantry Division from perm restricted to temp restricted – 3 pt - canceled
L9 - Cancel Withdrawal of 35th inf Divi – 3 pt - added

I'm going to study Deaniks AAR, I think there was something about attacking the West Coast

It's probably not worth describing the first day in detail, so we'll do it telegraphically again.
- KB attacks Pearl Harbor in full force - no BBs are sunk
- bKB attacks the port of Manila - only 4 submarines hit
- Mersing gambit
- landing Kota Bharu, Singkawang, Cagayan, Laoag, Aparri, San Fernando
- KXVIII sank AK Johore Maru in Gulf of Siam with 6 torpedoes
- Force Z is not detected

- USS Plunger attacked CV Akagi - miss
- aircraft losses (J:A) - 72:127 - not bad

I had the opportunity to save 12 ships from the ports. I chose 12 submarines from Manila.

Re: Pacific Inferno - Variant game Godefroy(A) vs Deaniks(J) - no Deaniks

Post by godefroycz »

In this game, the opponent leaves nothing to chance. Mersing is in Japanese hands and British forces in Malaya are in danger of being completely cut off. Cagayan is also lost, along with several damaged B-17s. Fortunately, the remnants of the squadron managed to move to India. The KB has moved west of Hawaii and the second attack on Pearl Harbor is coming. Several battleships are hit, but none are in danger of being sunk. Allied submarines are ineffective and only one Japanese ship is damaged.
The Allied command is trying to calm the chaos and concentrate forces.

The situation is not good. Opponents learned from our first game and Singapore will be indefensible. Again, he uses the Mavis as torpedo planes. Together with bKB, they cause me great losses. 18 ships are sunk today.
In China, the Japanese left Ichang, but 3 divisions advance rapidly on Changsha and push back the defenders. The situation is serious, but reinforcements are far away.
