Manstein decided to die on turn 3 of RtL scenario

Post by stemmax »

He decided to die for no reason at all. Opposed to what the logistics screen suggests there weren't any battles close to him, neither did he get bombed.

it would be very nice if this feature is removed

i haven't seen any player that enjoyed it
and in some cases there are absurd deaths like Konev who died during initial turns of GC just because he was sitting on the map hundreds or even thousand+ km away from a front

30 German generals died from accidents according to a quick google search. Others likely died from natural causes. Others from isolated air attacks in the rear. AFAIK we list died in action for all of these kinds of leader KIAs in the logistics phase. I appreciate the sense of loss, especially in a small scenario, but it's part of the game.

I am fine with the system. But I do have to ask why it seems to be only the best leaders getting the axe? Been talking in discord and every single instance where leaders died these leaders were in the top echelon of stats. I am just scratching my head on that one. Hopefully soon a mid to lower echelon leader will get axed to put me at ease :)

Vatutin was far behind the lines when he was ambushed by the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.

Werner Mölders died in Poland in an air accident. Nowhere near the front.

Two generals and a colonel died from injuries from the July 20th plot. Again, not on the front lines.

Von Reichenau suffered a stroke, then suffered severe head injuries when the aircraft carrying him to Leipzig crashed on landing in Lviv. No enemy action there either.

The point? Commanders don't have to be at the front to die.

Maybe some of the less competent leaders are also getting killed, but no one cares about them, so it goes unnoticed?

IIRC, there is a slightly higher chance of loss due to "bad luck" as a leader gets closer to the enemy, but mostly it's luck. It doesn't have anything to do with what level the leader is or how good he is. Since there no stats kept for the leaders lost in the logistics phase, this isn't something I can easily track.

Absolutely true Joel. I hope to hear of other leaders getting axed soon in Discord as other games progress there :)

Turn 56. Manstein died to a snaking mech Div that ignored several ZoCs. The rest apart from the romanians and 1 German General that died to a soviet naval landing in Crimea were "logistical" deaths. Especially fun was Model dying on turn 6 or so
