video rez seems to be at 16 colors in spwaw

Post by frog »

Ive tryed installing multiple times
800x 600 ect
Had sp2 installed & it looked ok.
Posted in april of 02 with this prob.
Never did get it fixed.
I think it was thought i was talking bout the B&W video cut seens.
I would like to install latest version & try again.
Has anyone had this problem?
Was it fixed?

The game should change the res to 800x600x256, check to make sure your video card and monitor drivers both allow this setting.

What video card and version of directx do you have, I have installed under win 95, win98se and win me, all three installations worked fine, though I did have to make sure that directx was installed, and video drivers were the last release.

The win95 machine (compaq 4402) gets some corruption while playing the vid99.smk file but that was just cosmetic. Both my HP and my dad's compaq play just fine.
thanks, John.

im just about to reinstall 7.1 on a newer puter { ive not been able to play at this rez so i took it off my other puter }
I had installed spwaw on 3 different puters before all with the same prob.
do i need to resize my desktop & rez setting in settings to be able to fix this ?
That would screw up my desktop !!!
I had sp2 installed & the colors looked right with it with out changeing my desktop.
Here is my set up:
AMD XP1700
512 ram
98se
DX 8.1
ASUS v 8170 64 meg ddr video card
desktop at 1024 x 768 x 16 bit color
Thank you for your help.

Since you are using 98se then some things are easier to check, if you right click on the desktop, then click on properties, click on settings then click on advanced you should check that:

font size small fonts
apply new colors without restarting

click adapter
set refresh to adapter default

click monitor
automatically detect plug and play monitors

Then apply those changes and reboot. See if that doesn't give you 800x600x256 while playing spwaw, for some reason your comp is not autoswitching resolutions.

On my win98se machine my desktop is also at 1024x768x16k colors, though I never went to dx 8.1 since my voodoo 3 doesn't like it, it works best with 8.0a. The only issues I have are problems with opengl and glide apps leaving the desktop at 640x480 if the app crashes, even if the app was running at a higher res. My comp will delay about .5 a second and click when changing resolutions but will then do it.

If you are using a refresh forcing util to up your refresh rates, for playing fps games try booting without it and use the adaptor and monitor defaults.
thanks, John.
