Official history of New Zealand in WWII digitised !

Post by Resisti »

For those interested in the subject, I think this is a very good news:

I am pleased to announce the New Zealand Electronic Text Centre's release of the pilot project for the digitisation of the Official Histories of New Zealand in the Second World War, a long out-of-print series which is unparalleled in its scholarship and exhaustive coverage. Many thanks to the Ministry for Culture and Heritage for granting permissions to deliver these volumes to the public online. Also thanks to the Vice Chancellor's Office for the special funding directed to this pilot project.

Four of the five books were generously made available for digitisation by the Victoria University Library, with the fifth, Maori Battalion, having been purchased second-hand specifically for the project. The full text of all volumes was double keyboarded into XML according to the guidelines of the Text Encoding Initiative. This first installation offers more than 1.5 million words, 31 full colour maps, 328 historical photographs, and 77 diagrams. In the near future we will develop a devoted site for the War Histories which will showcase some of the more interesting maps and photos within these texts.

We are now seeking funding to digitise the entire series of the histories, 50 volumes in total. This would generate a fully searchable archive of more than 15 million words and represent a valuable national and global resource to students, the general public, and researchers alike.

The first five volumes chosen for the pilot project:
a.. Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45:Prisoners of War
b.. Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45: The Relief of Tobruk
c.. Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45:Battle for Egypt
d.. Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45: 28 (Maori) Battalion
e.. Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War 1939-45: The Pacific
You can view them here: http://www.nzetc.org/corpora/WH2.html

Please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments regarding this or any project at the NZETC.

*In the coming weeks we will be launching local indexing and searching, in the form of an open source system developed here at the the NZETC. Up until this point our archives have been indexed and searched through one of our partner institutions, the University of Virginia Electronic Text Center.
You will notice that the War History Collection will not be indexed and fully searchable until we launch the new system.
