Suggestion for Shore Bombardment

Post by canuckgamer »

I think naval bombardment should be limited to when a ground unit is either attacking from or defending in a beach hex. One of the tactics I have been using in North Africa is supporting ground attacks on units defending in coastal hexes. You can do this along the entire North African coast.
As far as I know naval bombardment was non existent in North Africa with the exception of possibly the sieges of Tobruk.

I think this is fine. This is a call for some interesting naval battles. Otherwise, for which reason would you exit your ships from port?

I would leave it as it is.

It does seem strong (and probably is). However there is a huge price to pay for extensive use of shore.

If you go look my AAR with Bolderaide, each battle where shore was used reduced the readiness of the fleet. The Italian made easy piece meal (Trafalgar like) of a British fleet of about same size that did shore for only 2 turns as readiness was down to about 50% Also to pounder.

But may that efficiency of shore could vary depending on hexes?

While we are at it, I would make a suggestion too:

I would allow shore in port for defense of own hex only. Ships in Leningrad or Sebastopol should be able to help land units based on top of them.

For that particular situation (ships in ports):
  • I would only allow it for defense
  • I would only allow it on base hex (not adjacent ones)
  • I would allow it only at reduced strength compared for normal at sea shore; 50% or so
But at least those ships would be of some consequence and use when attacked.

Too powerful, it was removed before to avoid exploits in Dunkerque for example during battle of France.

But was not the exploit that they could also be used for offensive purposes while in port?

No it was used in defensive posture to slow down the armor.

O well. I understand that play balance is more important. France is already making many German players nervous as each extra turn has consequences later....
