Franco-Prussian War.

Post by stormbringer3 »

I'd like some thoughts on opening French Strategies. I'm trying to decide whether to mostly strengthen my combat units or sack and replace all those poor starting HQs.
Thanks for any opinions.

Strengthening your frontline units should be priority #1, any unit that enters battle with the Prussians at only strength 7 will be chewed up in short order.
As for your reserves, I think it depends on how aggressive you want to be out of the gate. If you're pushing forward with an offensive in July, more units at full strength will matter a lot more than a couple % of morale from a better HQ. If you're being more cautious, improving your HQs is not a bad idea.

I will say that you should always reinforce your HQs to full strength before sacking a commander (also do this before upgrading units). It saves paying more MPPs on reinforcing a more expensive unit.

I never played a SC game before and bought this entirely for this DLC.

I played 2-4 turns into the scenario only to realize that there was a reinforce button. So I restarted.

Basically, I marched on Saarbrucken and created a front line along the Saar river with the bulk of my forces. I pulled back the army corps in the east as well. Most reinforcements would need to be sent to the Saar line as the Prussians are much stronger than you and have better units (at least it seems so). After a while the Prussians started moving an army towards Metz from the Luxembourg border. I allowed them to move forward and once the Prussians were weak enough along the Saar I moved forward and cut off their army above Metz from supply.

Have no idea how this game works. My strategy seemed to work, although it took many more turns to mop up the Germans near Metz, and then many more turns to pivot my army to handle the eastern/southern problem, which was being defended by 2-3 French divisions against at least 1 Bavarian corps.

A few turns later, my K/D ratio was 6/2 and I was marching on Mainz from all directions.

Fun scenario. No idea what I'm doing.

I love this game (and the entire SC line) and have been recently playing the 1870 scenario.

Please, please, please consider adapting the engine to a whole separate Napoleonics game or at least creating some Napoleonic scenarios (like your new DLC)....
