Soviet 1941 cavalry performance issue?

Post by Obamacubed »

I may have found an issue with the soviet 1941 cavV2 squad. I have 2 cav divisions in the odessa garrison and I saw this in the post battle results.

Each cav squad has 7 rifles and 4 machine pistols yet none of them know how to use them????? With the number of cav squads in the battle that is 1281 rifles and 700 something machine pistols and not a single hit... Hell you can even see that 1 ONE!!! 11 man nkvd squad with 11 machine pistols outperformed 2100 something men, roughly half of which are guards with 60 morale.

There are likely some reductions or limits on cavalry participation. I'd have to see a lot of other combats involving cavalry that weren't hitting anything before saying it's a bug and not WAD. The fact that the cavalry is hitting with some weapons makes me think that some are firing and just missing. The system is very streaky in that you can have an element get lucky and get repeated hits. That might explain the NKVD doing so well. It's the Seargent York factor, where one person/squad at the right place/right circumstances does a lot, while most squads sit around and do little or nothing.

I haven't looked at this beyond 1942 but within the 41-42 timeframe it's incredibly rare for Soviet small arms and tank ordnance to hit anything, they're basically depicted as mindless cannon fodder. I'm surprised your FTs did so well, never seen that before.

I have noticed this in later battles as well using cav corps in december 1941, I can take more screenshots. In my experience they are outperformed by every other infantry element.

From the example above you'll see the Maxim has both lower fire and hit rate than the cavalry. I think you'll find this is representative of how the game depicts the SU, at least in 1941-2. If there's anything way out of the ordinary above, it's the NKVD element which fires 279 times!!!

As far as attacks are concerned, artillery suppresses as much as it can- very little- the combat elements advance and get slaughtered, what's left after advancing to 0 range is added up against the defenders and the final odds calculated.

I have seen Soviet return fire detailed on level 7 down to how many shots are being fired, but not consistently. Not sure but I think I had to watch the battle on a lower level then switch to level 7 to see this kind of detail after arty had finished. If I watch all the way through on level 7 I don't see any Soviet return fire and Axis shots are not counted either.
